How can you make a difference?

The Nutrition Section, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) is seeking an individual consultant to finalize, in a consistent style, 4 technical landscape analysis reports on prevention of child overweight and to consider the potential for relevant academic papers, prepare and test the usefulness of fact sheets on key policies related to prevention of child overweight, and to assess the potential for benchmarking key policies related to prevention of child overweight in the East Asia and Pacific Regional.

Work Assignment:

(I) Finalization of 4 technical reports and consideration of potential for academic papers

The reports will be based on the content of the 4 landscape analyses presented in a consistent style and highlighting the gaps, opportunities and challenges for each country context. Illustrative graphs and tables should be included where appropriate. Academic papers based on assessment methods and/or content of the report will be considered and outlines prepared if appropriate.

(II) Preparation of fact sheets

An initial two short summary fact sheets (2-4 sides each) focusing on one policy area for the prevention of overweight, and in keeping with global and UNICEF guidance, will be prepared. These will be circulated to UNICEF Country Office staff to test their usefulness and further fact sheets developed if they are found to be helpful.

(III) Benchmarking of key policies

Research will be conducted on existing benchmarking schemes for obesogenic environments in the region and beyond. In addition, the existence of key data required for benchmarking will be assessed for feasibility of developing a benchmarking scheme.

4 x Technical reports based on existing reports including methods, results, conclusions and recommendations (Estimated 20 pages plus annexes)

Output 2: Outline of academic papers

2 x Outlines of academic papers – potentially with a focus on methods and/or findings - setting out scope and content of the paper.

Output 3: Fact sheets

2 x Fact sheets highlighting one policy area including summary rationale, key principles, practical tips and useful resources (Estimated 2 pages)

Output 4: Benchmarking summary

1 x benchmarking summary with an assessment of similar schemes in other countries, feasibility of a scheme in the EAP region and overview of potential data required (PowerPoint or bulleted summary)

Duration of Contract: 20 working day during the period 9 July – 9 December 2021.

Working Location: The consultant is home-based and will work in his/her own premises but will regularly report to the supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in nutrition-related science subject.
  • A minimum of 2 years academic experience in research on prevention of overweight and obesogenic environments.
  • Knowledge of the policy landscape related to prevention of overweight and obesogenic environments in the EAP region is an asset.
  • Proven experience with preparation of technical documents and academic papers.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills.
