Result of Service Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, the consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:

Develop the elements for a strategic mapping and report on initiatives at the international levels including the UN-system, non-UN international and regional entities on the use of space technologies to support climate action, mapping existing activities and identifying possible future synergies: - Include the inputs of relevant entities at the international and regional levels incl. the UN-system, non-UN entities. - Include overview of relevant activities, mandates, programmes mandates, field presences, donors/beneficiaries, and institutional partnerships. - Initiate a gap analysis and work with both UN entities and relevant non-UN entities for ideas on future activities to support climate action.

Expected tangible and measurable output(s)/deliverable(s): - Development of indicative list of international and regional entities - Establishment of a focal point network - Review existing climate action initiatives at the international levels - Prepare a report outline

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), as the United Nations entity responsible for promoting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, has a mandate to develop and implement programs that support sustainable development, including climate action. UNOOSA also works in close partnership with other UN agencies, national space agencies, governmental bodies, academic organizations, and civil society to fulfil technical and policy-oriented objectives of space-based projects to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 13: Climate Action.

The consultancy position is located within the Office of the Director (OD), which holds the responsibility for developing and building a dedicated Space4Climate Action initiative.

The scientific community and the UN system have recognized that space-based technologies and applications are essential components in climate change research, monitoring, and policy enactment. In addressing climate change, there are five key categories of activities that space infrastructure can contribute to: climate science, monitoring, mitigation, adaptation, and resilience.

The purpose of this consultancy is to conduct and support a Strategic Mapping Exercise related to existing international efforts using space technologies to support climate adaptation, mitigation, monitoring and resilience.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a space related fields or climate change, development studies, management, international relations, project or programme management or a related field is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Experience: - A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in programme/project management and implementation in space-related or climate change related field is required. - Experience in working in a space-related entity and implementing activities, at the international level, for strategic engagement and actions for promoting international cooperation and peaceful uses of outer space is required. - Experience in conducting research, preparing background papers, and briefing notes for high-level meetings and for senior management is required. - Good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multi-cultural organization are required. - Familiarity with the work of the UN is desirable. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consultancy, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
