Result of Service Contributes to social media outreach through content production and posting, focusing on the following:

Drawing upon material from the Office of the Executive Secretary, substantive units of the Secretariat and partners, reflect Secretariat priorities in digital conversations; A priority focus will be social media strategy support and promotion of key events related to the post-2020 process and Part 2 of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15), scheduled for 3rd quarter 2022.

Coordinates daily outreach on social media platforms, with other Secretariat staff, including the creation of content, to increase visibility of the Convention, the CBD Secretariat’s work, the work and profile of the Executive Secretary and biodiversity issues.

Develops and implements social media strategies in line with overall Secretariat communications plans for campaigns, relevant international days, meetings of the Secretariat and activities of the Executive Secretary.

Prepares reports on social media implementation and carries out research and analysis on such implementation on a regular basis.

Duties and Responsibilities Organizational setting

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature in Rio in 1992. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by United Nations Environment Programme. Its main tasks are to arrange for and service meetings of the Conference of the Parties, including preparation of pertinent documentation, operation of the central node of the clearing-house mechanism, liaison and coordination with other international bodies and processes and, in close collaboration with these partners, the provision of technical support for the effective implementation of the Convention.

Duties and responsibilities

The consultant is expected to provide results that have a substantial impact on the visibility of the work of the Convention on Biological Diversity, especially for the negotiations of the post 2020 process, but keeping in mind the overall outreach needs of the Convention and relevant COP decisions. Activities will focus on targeted and strategic outreach and engagement on social media platforms, resulting in:

a) Increases in size of online communities (likes and followers on the different platforms) by an average increase of 10% on all platforms by the end of the contract. b) Maximization of reach of individual posts; and c) Appropriate engagement of the Secretariat in relevant outreach campaigns organized by partners in the Secretariat’s campaigns. d) Robust engagement of partners in social media campaigns organized by the Secretariat in the form of sharing, retweeting, and redistribution of content, and creation of their own content.

Specific content will also be generated in a timely way to support outreach related to:

The negotiations of the post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. Part 2 COP 15 scheduled for 3rd quarter 2022, scheduled for 3rd Quarter of 2022, and Related processes including UNFCCC COP 27 The work of the IPBES Secretariat. The work of the Biodiversity-related Conventions

All documentation must be produced on software compatible with that of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, i.e., MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, etc.

Qualifications/special skills Competencies

Professionalism: Ability to understand complex issues pertaining to biodiversity; ability to work under pressure and to use limited time and resources effectively; flexibility to adapt rapidly to changing situations; ability to ensure that the highest possible quality outputs are produced. Communication: Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively; ability to communicate effectively with audiences of various levels of seniority and technical knowledge, tailoring language, tone, style and format appropriately; ability to communicate with various stakeholders in politically sensitive situations with diplomacy and tact. Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with professional and technical staff at senior and junior levels from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Planning and Organizing: Ability to identify priorities, work to tight deadlines, handle concurrent projects and coordinate with the work of others.

Skills: Excellent computer skills are required, including the following: Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator (or equivalent), social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube. Strong writing and editing skills in English language along with well-developed editorial judgement are required. Profound understanding social media platforms and digital media landscape is required. Ability to develop and implement social media strategies and campaigns is desirable. Knowledge of social media content production and best practices is required. Ability to integrate video and multimedia elements into social media content is desirable.

Academic Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations, environmental science, or a related field of study is required.

Experience: A minimum of two years of work experience in corporate communications is required. A minimum of one year of experience with social media platform management is desirable. Proficient in using new technologies, web-based platforms and social media networks is desirable; Experience in multimedia communication, including integrating video and other visual is desirable; Experience in graphic design and visual communications is desirable; Experience in communicating the issues related to the Convention on Biological Diversity, The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the UN system and other international sustainable development-related processes is desirable.

Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
