Duties and Responsibilities

UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) focuses on crime and drug challenges that are best addressed through a coordinated approach at the regional level. The Regional Programme is focused on six areas of work: Addressing the Drug Problem; Countering Transnational Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking; Anti-Corruption; Terrorism Prevention; Criminal Justice; and Crisis Responses.

Under the Global and Regional Programmes, one of the areas of UNODC’s technical assistance to the member states include providing up-to-date information, and most recent evidence-informed scientific recommendations to handle specific issues under the UNODC mandates. To fulfil this, UNODC produces a wide variety of quality, high-impact advocacy materials, reports, publications, and studies capturing the main areas under the programme, to inform policy makers and programme managers from countries in the region.

The Unwaste project is publishing a report at the end of February 2024. In view of ensuring reaching the targets related to awareness raising, advocacy and public dissemination, UNODC seeks to hire a consultant to provide support with the communication of technical content of UNODC ROSEAP report series on waste trafficking.

Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant:

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Coordinator (Environmental Team), the consultant will perform the following tasks:

a) Convert the specialized or technical content into content accessible to the public and policy makers. This will include summarizing the key messages of the report that is to be published by February 2024. b) Produce a version of the policy brief of the report that is adapted to policy makers c) Produce the communication materials for the report launch. d) Outreach to relevant stakeholders and distribute communication materials for the report launch. e) Evaluating text for consistency and appropriate use of particular UN vocabulary, actively scanning for and identifying sensitivities (diplomatic and other) that may require special consideration and/or revision. f) Ensure the correctness of context, content, and terminologies and ensure all deliverables comply with UNODC vocabulary and quality standards. g) Provide constructive feedback to improve product quality. h) Coordinating with UNODC’s graphic designer to ensure consistency with the content of communication materials produced for the report.

Qualifications/special skills

• Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in sustainable development, business administration, international relations, social science law, political science, international relations, or criminology, is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

• Work experience: - A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience at international and national level in environmental field and science communication is required. - Previous experience in the UN or international organizations is required. - A demonstrated interest in regional development and/or social issues, especially those related to the thematic areas within UNODC’s is required. - Experience of working in the Southeast Asia Region is desirable - Experience or knowledge of environmental crimes in Southeast Asia and the Greater Mekong Sub-region is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English, with excellent skills in drafting and content editing of documents prepared in English, is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.
