Duties and Responsibilities

Background: ESCWA is seeking a dedicated and experienced Consultant to support the Media Plan of the Arab Forum for Equality in Cairo on June 4-5, 2024. The consultant will play a key role in advocating for Josour's initiative towards a better future for all, supporting the launch of a multis-stakeholder dialogue on inequality and exclusion, and moderating progress reporting focused on addressing youth unemployment in the Arab region. Duties and Responsibilities: It is increasingly clear that crisis has become a permanent feature of the policy environment in the Arab region. Indeed, the Arab region has suffered from multiple and overlapping crises in recent years. Conflict, economic crises, environmental crises, humanitarian crises, and political crises have constrained economic growth, inhibited social development, exacerbated existing inequalities, and created new inequalities. Many of these crises reinforce one another and are both a cause and consequence of inequality. While crises exacerbate and create inequalities by disproportionately hurting the most vulnerable, inequality can also trigger crises by driving social dissatisfaction or unsustainable development. This new era of crises requires a novel policy paradigm that reflects the urgency and depth of the challenge, and ensures that policymakers are not trapped in an endless process of short-term policymaking, unable to deliver on sustainable long-term development. In this context, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), is organizing in collaboration with the Sawiris Foundation for Development, the International Monetary Fund, the Regional Technical Assistance Center for the Middle East, and the Pathfinders Group "For Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies" at New York University, the third Arab Forum for Equality under the patronage of the Ministry of Social Solidarity of Egypt, in Cairo, Egypt, on 4 and 5 June 2024. The 3rd Arab Forum for Equality will examine inequality in times of polycrises, demonstrating how the compound effects of overlapping crises in the region are having a devastating impact on the most vulnerable and on the ability of Governments to protect their citizens; while exploring policy solutions to reduce or mitigate inequality in times of crisis, and ensure that policymakers can exit crisis mode over the medium term. The following are the specific objectives of the first Arab Forum for Equality: - Continue the dialogue between policymakers in the Arab region and other regions, experts, and civil society organizations on how to reduce inequalities. - Draw links between inequality and multiple crises. - Showcase best practices from countries that were able to reduce inequalities in times of crisis, or have put longer-term policies in place to counter threats of crisis and ensure stability. - Share innovative and practical policy solutions to reduce inequalities, with a focus on crises. Within delegated authority, the Consultant will be responsible for the following duties: - Support the Media Plan of the Arab Forum for Equality that will be held in Cairo 4-5 June 2024 - Advocate Josour’s initiative for a better future for all. - Support the launch of a multis-stakeholder dialogue with global and Arab leaders and experts on inequality and exclusion in the region. - Moderate and recap the progress reporting towards achieving the “Josour initiative”, which aims to address youth unemployment in the Arab region.

Qualifications/special skills

A Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 10 years of professional work experience in media planning and execution, preferably in the context of forums or conferences is required. Strong advocacy skills with a passion for promoting initiatives aimed at social impact and positive change is required. Excellent communication and moderation abilities to engage with diverse stakeholders, including global and Arab leaders and experts is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in Arabic and English is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
