Outputs / Work Assignments (Deliverables): - Research, mapping and analysis on marine initiatives, stakeholders and gaps - Concept notes of scaling up ongoing initiatives - Assist in the compilation, design, and dissemination of info-graphics, factsheets, and awareness materials including social media posts for (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linked-in) - Support the organization of a regional event dedicated to the effective management of Marine Protected Areas. - Review of technical reports and outputs of related ongoing projects

Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Setting, Purpose and Objective:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Regional Office for West Asia delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives.” This consultancy is home-based under the supervision of Programme Management Officer of the Healthy and Productive Ecosystems Subprogramme. With several marine focused initiatives and projects, the UNEP West Asia Office (UNEP ROWA) under the Regional Coordinator for Healthy and Productive Ecosystems is recruiting a consultant to support in the implementation of the marine related projects. The consultant will work closely with the Regional Coordinator to implement activities, support planning, monitoring and reporting. The consultant will also support in the gathering of data and information in the region. The consultant will further support identifying best practices, potential partners, etc. through research. He/She will also assist in developing communication material to further support raising awareness and sharing the outputs of the programme. The consultant will also support in the organisation of a regional event dedicated to the effective management of marine protected areas and prepare PowerPoint presentations. The post is currently a remote based post due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Ecosystem Regional Coordinator, in UNEP West Asia Office, the individual consultant will take the overall responsibility of the following: - Conduct a desk review and mapping of marine initiatives in the West Asia region: This includes: map current relevant work and best practices and case studies on effective management of marine resources and marine protected areas in the region - Analysis and mapping of relevant regional and international stakeholders - Rapid institutional analysis to identify gaps, capacity constraints and coordination inefficiencies - Identification of potential opportunities for scaling up ongoing initiatives - Assist in the compilation, design, and dissemination of info-graphics, factsheets, and awareness materials including social media posts for (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linked-in) - Support the organization of a regional event/capacity building workshop dedicated to the effective management of marine protected areas through: Identify the countries of relevant stakeholders, organize logistics, collaborate with partners for the promotion of the event. Support the drafting of the concept notes and relevant documents required for the implementation. Identify and contact important stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the event. Summarize the outcomes and reach of the regional event. - Support on the revision and updating of technical reports and outputs. Address comments and feedback received from focal points and revise reports accordingly. - Track and monitor project activities and deliverables to plan.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant area related to environmental management or marine biodiversity or environmental studies or international policy/relations; a first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree; Experience: At least 5 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in research, sciences, etc. Language: Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of Arabic language is desirable.
