The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, for the benefit of people and nature. It aims to halt the degradation of ecosystems and restore them to achieve global goals. The UN Decade positions the restoration as a major nature-based solution towards meeting a wide range of global development goals and national priorities. Within the UN Decade, UNESCO leads on the creation of the ‘Our Humanature Pathway’ as UN Decade Collaborating Agency jointly with FAO, UNEP, and potentially other UN Decade partners. The Panel will bring together thought leaders, leading cultural voices, environmental activists, Indigenous Peoples, experts, Youth and opinion-makers for a period of two years (2022-2024) providing a platform for discussions addressing core questions on humanity’s role in establishing a healthy and harmonic relationship with nature –i.e. looking into ‘alternative stories’ of humanity. The Panel aims at supporting the UN Decade and the global #GenerationRestoration movement by addressing the “big questions” about what steps are required for a real transformational change towards the restoration not only of the ecosystems but also restoring the broken relationship between human societies with nature. It will thereby inspire, advise and amplify the narrative for a global ecosystem restoration movement for 2021-2030 and beyond.
