Overview

Evaluate and improve accessibility standards in library services.

You have:

  • Advanced degree in social sciences or related area is required.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in evaluating accessibility criteria including for digital accessibility is required.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Fluency in other UN official language is desirable.

Result of Service

Design of an evaluation method, agreed with Library & Archives, that will enable an assessment of the physical spaces, as well as the digital and print collections, and the webpages and online tools as to accessibility standards. Effective communication with pertinent internal and external stakeholders. A complete study of all relevant aspects. A report, including an evaluation and resulting recommendations for digital and physical improvements, listed by priority and feasibility. Successful transfer of knowledge and expertise in accessible client services with a focus on library services through a presentation to Library and Archives staff. Advice on the creation of a disability collection within the library, with a focus on physical set-up, and presentation to Library and Archives management on the topic.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations (UN) Library and Archives Geneva serves as a center for research and an instrument of international understanding. To provide diplomats, UN staff and academics that use the Library and Archives for research with the most up-to-date as well as unique and historic resources in these areas, the institution gives access to digital and print books and articles, as well as to the records and archives of the League of Nations and UN Geneva. It also brings people together by organizing knowledge-sharing events and other activities in its spaces and reading rooms. Within the framework of the project “Improving Accessibility of the United Nations Geneva Library Collections in Human Rights, International Law and Multilateral Affairs”, the consultant is expected to evaluate accessibility for physically and print-disabled persons to the collections, which consist of print and digital/online resources. This includes access to print collections within the building, and digital resources on the website and other online tools. The study and evaluation shall be presented in a report including recommendations for digital and physical improvements by priority and feasibility. The consultant will also provide expertise on accessible client service with a focus on library services through a presentation to Library and Archives staff.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced degree in social sciences or related area is required. A minimum of five years of experience in evaluating accessibility criteria including for digital accessibility is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consultancy, fluency in English is required. Fluency in other UN official language is desirable.
