  1. Purpose of the Consultancy

The overall purpose of the consultancy is to conduct literature review on the current situation of antimicrobial use for COVID-19 at regional (Eastern Mediterranean region and global levels and potential impact of using antibiotics for COVID-19 on the burden of antimicrobial resistance.

  1. Background

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global problem to which the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may further contribute. WHO is concerned that levels of antimicrobial resistance will further be fuelled by the inappropriate use of antibiotics during the COVID-19 pandemic. While evidence shows that only small proportion of COVID-19 patients need antibiotics to treat subsequent bacterial infections, reports indicate that azithromycin and other broad-spectrum antibiotics are being widely used as part of COVID-19 patient management. Furthermore, COVID-19 hospital admissions increase the risk of health-care-associated infections and the transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms, which in turn lead to increased antimicrobial use.

In this regard, there is a need to understand how COVID-19 affects AMR trends and levels of antibiotics use and consumption at hospital and community levels. The consultant shall assist EMRO to review available scientific literature, countries report, documents, and other sources of information to identify the possible effects of COVID-19 on the state of antibiotic resistance and antibiotic use in the countries of the region.
