Duties and Responsibilities 1. Organizational Setting, Purpose and Objective: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Regional Office for West Asia delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy is under the supervision of the Regional Coordinator of the chemicals and pollution action subprogramme of the UNEP West Asia Office (UNEP ROWA). UNEP’s work in chemicals and pollution action focusses on supporting the governments, industry, and civil society organizations to minimize the adverse effects of chemicals and pollution on human health and the environment. As part of the chemicals and pollution action, UNEP in collaboration with government of Lebanon, development partners and other UN agencies is implementing a project entitled “Environmentally Sound Healthcare Waste Management in the Republic of Lebanon”. The project's primary objectives include showcasing an integrated, environmentally sound healthcare waste management system and facilitating capacity development for its long-term sustainability in Lebanon. Objective of this consultancy is to provide national level inputs for the implementation of the “Environmentally Sound Healthcare Waste Management in the Republic of Lebanon” project.

2. Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Chemicals and Pollution Action Regional Coordinator in UNEP West Asia Office, the consultant will take the overall responsibility of the following: 1) Provide inputs for developing a handbook for environmentally sound healthcare waste management in Lebanon. The consultant will collect essential data and information to aid in the creation of a handbook focused on environmentally responsible healthcare waste management in Lebanon. This handbook will be developed in collaboration with an implementing partner possessing expertise in healthcare waste management. The consultant's role will also involve offering substantive reviews and valuable input to enhance the quality of the handbook's development. 2) Provide inputs for the establishing an environmentally sound waste treatment facility for a cluster of hospitals. The consultant will conduct surveys and gather data and information to the establishment of an environmentally sustainable waste treatment facility. The consultant will provide substantive inputs for the design of the facility. Additionally, the consultant will be responsible for crafting a comprehensive terms of reference for the operation of an environmentally sound healthcare waste treatment facility serving a cluster of hospitals, in close collaboration with pertinent stakeholders. 3)Awareness raising and coordination. The consultant will create awareness-raising materials for the healthcare waste management project and provide coordination for convening project related meetings.

Qualifications/special skills - Master’s degree in environment sciences, engineering, pollution, or economics is required. - A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree is required. - Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the environmental field preferably on waste management issues in Lebanon is required. - Solid overall computer literacy is required. - Excellent communication skills is required. - Excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills and analytical skills are required.

Languages Proficiency in English and Arabic is required.
