ABOUT WFP

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has been present in Sierra Leone since 1968. It supports the Government through a range of integrated life-saving and resilience-building activities.

Environmental degradation, particularly deforestation, exposes Sierra Leone to climate shocks and natural disasters, including seasonal flash floods, landslides, wildfires and windstorms. To ensure that populations affected by crises can meet their immediate food and nutritional needs and recover from shocks, WFP provides emergency food assistance, prioritizing cash transfers, where appropriate.

Through its resilience building and asset creation project, WFP strengthens the livelihoods of food insecure communities that are vulnerable to shocks, by implementing programmes that create productive assets, promote the production of nutritionally diverse foods and irrigate under-utilized Inland Valley Swamps for year-round cultivation.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

In partnership with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, WFP also addresses the root causes of chronic malnutrition, by improving access to complementary foods, and enhancing maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) and feeding practices. WFP targets children between 0-23 months and pregnant and lactating women and girls.

In addition, WFP supports the Government’s Free Quality Education Initiative and is a key implementing partner of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE). To improve educational outcomes, WFP provides daily school feeding in 5 districts across the country. To expand the benefits associated with school feeding, in select schools, WFP is undertaking a Home-Grown School Feeding approach, based on local procurement from smallholder farmers.

To strengthen peace between Sierra Leone and Guinea, WFP is also working with the International Organization for Migration to implement a cross-border UN Peacebuilding Project. The partners are working to minimize localized conflicts between cattle keepers and crop farmers in Falaba district in Sierra Leone and Faranah prefecture in Guinea. WFP supports all-year climate-sensitive agriculture, by cultivating inland valley swamps. This draws people away from the slash-and-burn farming in the upland, associated with tree-cutting, reduced soil fertility and low yields.
