Overview

You have:

• Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in architecture, urbanism, social sciences, international relations or related fields.
• A first level degree with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
• Minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in project or program formulation and management, event/seminar management, or related areas is required.
• General understanding of development paradigms of urban topics is desirable.
• International experience with the United Nations System is an asset.
• Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
• Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The main documents outlining the mandate of the organization are the Vancouver Declaration on Human Settlements, the Habitat Agenda, the Istanbul Declaration on Human Settlements, the Declaration on Cities and Other Human Settlements in the New Millennium, and UN General Assembly Resolution A/56/206. “Cities that go beyond” project, developed within the framework of strengthening and implementing the Action Plans of the Spanish Urban Agenda, is managed by the UN-Habitat Country Office in Spain. The initiative aims to support, promote, and highlight the transformative projects that Spanish municipalities are incorporating into their Urban Agenda Action Plans in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 11. The initiative recognizes the strategic role of intermediate cities and their capacity to deliver meaningful urban, social, and environmental impacts through concrete transformative interventions. The project focuses on three main areas: delivering technical assistance; building a community of practice for ongoing knowledge exchange; and disseminating results both at the institutional level and across the broader community. The four-year initiative will be carried out in close cooperation with participating cities and key public and private partners. In this context, UN-Habitat intends to contract a Consultant to support the implementation of the “Cities that go Beyond” initiative in its urban dimension. Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer, UN-Habitat Country Office Spain who will supervise that the outputs will be delivered accordingly, the duties and responsibilities are: a. Provide technical urban support to the four to six municipal transformative projects participating in the initiative. b. Participate in the monitoring of the project, including the collection, analysis, and organization of data and evidence related to urban interventions as well as the preparation of monitoring outputs and reporting deliverables, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and coherence with project requirements. c. Contribute to the design of a Community of Practice focused on urban aspects, including the preparation of inputs, technical briefs, and knowledge-exchange materials. d. Prepare technical documents, concept notes, and proposals related to the development or expansion of project components, particularly those with an urban focus within Cities that Go Beyond. e. Support coordination activities with participating municipalities and relevant partners, ensuring consistent communication and follow-up on technical matters. f. Document meetings, discussions, and technical sessions, and maintain organized records to support project implementation and knowledge management. g. Elaboration of reports and technical proposals related to new components of the project.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in architecture, urbanism, social sciences, international relations or related fields is required. A first level degree with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in project or program formulation and management, event/seminar management, or related areas is required. General understanding of development paradigms of urban topics is derisable. International experience is an asset, especially with the United Nations System, familiarity with UN-Habitat New Urban Agenda, UN Reform agenda, SDG’s and related global initiatives is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this position, fluency in spoken and written English is required. In addition, this position is in Spain and therefore fluency in spoken and written Spanish is also required.
