Duties and Responsibilities A. Background

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

As part of the Economy Division, UNEP International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) works with developing countries to implement sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, with focus on holistic waste management. IETC provide technical and advisory support to national and local governments to enhance their use of environmentally sound strategies and approaches. IETC also implement in-country demonstration projects using innovative waste prevention and management methods and technologies to improve human well-being, reduce the impact of climate change, increase resilience and create jobs. Working with a wide range of partners and in line with relevant multilateral environmental agreements, IETC mission is to serve as a global center of excellence on environmentally sound technologies with focus on holistic waste management

1) Project on the International Climate Initiative (IKI) funded waste and climate change Project (WCC) IETC has been working with several partners through the IKI-funded project titled Strengthening the capacity of the waste sectors in Bhutan, Mongolia and Nepal by means of a circular economy concept aimed at reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs). This project is supporting the uptake of environmental sound waste management technologies in Mongolia, Nepal and Bhutan. As part of the execution of these projects, the consultant is to be hired to organize events, analyze reports and conduct desk study.

2) Project development IETC will work on possible project development related to improving municipal solid waste situations in Africa and plastic circularity in Asia. The consultant will help support desk-based data collection of municipal solid waste in Africa and plastic issues in Asia.

3) Series of events (e.g. IETC 30th events, TICAD 8, ISWA) IETC will organize a series of events IETC 30th celebration events as well as other key events such as TICAD 8 and ISWA. The consultant will help support organizing and coordination of events.

B. Duties

  • Objectives Under supervision and guidance from IETC programme officer, the consultant will support the IKI WWC project, assisting research and organization of events.

  • Output expectations The consultant will support analyzing reports and help support project implementation. The consultant will liaise with relevant stakeholders to organize events and webinars. 1. Support analysis for the IKI project 2. Organize events 3. Support desk study related to plastic waste in Asia and MSW issues in Africa 4. Support IETC supervisor in other tasks linked to the IKI project

  • Deliverables 1. Report on project analysis for the IKI project 2. Desk study on plastic issues in Asia – Report on findings 3. Desk study on MSW improvement in Africa – Report on findings 4. Support organization of various events - Report on events

  • Performance indicators Submission of a deliverable of analysis results with relevant annexes through electronic submission.

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in social science, international relationship or environment or equivalent practical experience.

Experience: - Minimum of 5 years of working experiences in international project management - Experience with implementation in the field of waste management at international level - Advanced knowledge of waste management, in particular plastic waste management - Knowledge of climate change mitigation is advantage - Working experience in producing technical documents on waste management is desirable - Working experience with UN system is an advantage

Language: Fluency in both written and spoken English. Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.
