Purpose of Activity/Assignment:

  • Consult children and teachers of 3 schools on their perception and functionality of the previous programmed installed WASH structures (3 Water system, 3 latrines blocks and 3 group handwashing in each school) in Bafata region.
  • Consult children/students and teachers of 27 (twenty-seven) schools and collect their point of view regarding the new WASH infrastructure in Bijagos, Begene and Bissora.
  • Consult adolescents for their input on the design of the adolescent space
  • Consult communities in the 27 schools with complete interventions on their preference of location of latrines. Prepare location plans of where the WASH structures will be placed.
  • Consult the 8 schools and village leaders on their interest to have a public standpipe linked with consumer payment of water. Identify if there is any other functioning water system in the community
  • Review the functionality of the Hygiene clubs in the schools, especially in adolescents’ girls' information received on menstrual hygiene Including girls using Menstrual cups

Scope of Work:

  • Engage consultations with communities, students, teachers, and school directors regarding the design of wash related infrastructure, amenities, and accessories s that they might find fit.
  • Review past designs of school sanitation after one year of use and suggest improvements to design and construction methods.
  • Prepare new construction documents such as Bill of Quantities (BoQ), drawing and design for new WASH in schools’ intervention.
  • Develop a comprehensive report with the main outcomes from the consultation as well as technical justification for the plans and designs proposed.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have

  • Advanced University degree in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas Engineering Architecture, community engagement or related field. (*A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.)
  • A minimum of Five years of relevant professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience in working with an international aid organization is highly desired
  • Prior, documented, the experience of community consultation
  • Prior experience in working with adolescents and menstrual hygiene
  • Previous experience of use of mWater or other smartphone-based monitoring tools meriting
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. The candidate may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid).
