UNESCO’s work to protect, safeguard and promote culture is based on its comprehensive set of six international Conventions in the field of culture. Safeguarding significant and exceptional cultural heritage – including Jewish cultural heritage – therefore forms a crucial part of UNESCO’s mandate. Under the 1972 World Heritage Convention, UNESCO supports the protection of numerous World Heritage properties, including the Jewish quarters of Budapest, Hungary; Odesa, Ukraine; Prague, Czech Republic; the historic synagogues of Delos, Greece; the ShUM sites of Speyer, Worms, and Mainz in Germany and the newly inscribed Jewish-Medieval Heritage of Erfurt, also in Germany. UNESCO also undertook a number of initiatives to preserve documentary heritage, such as Sarajevo Haggadah manuscripts inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. Since 1988, the Jewish Heritage Program (JHP) at World Monuments Fund has contributed to the conservation and protection of almost 60 sites in 28 countries. In its early days, the JHP was mainly devoted to the restoration of Ashkenazi synagogues in Central and Eastern Europe in the aftermath of the dissolution of the USSR. The Program’s scope has gradually expanded, implementing projects in Brazil, China, Morocco, and India, ranging from the documentation of traditional houses in Uzbekistan to the preservation of oral histories in the Sephardic community of Cape Verde. In this context, UNESCO and the World Monuments Fund (WMF) [joined](https://www.unesco.org/en/articles/unesco-and-wmf-join-forces-inventory-jewish-heritage-worldwide#:~:text=Numerous%20Jewish%20Sites%20Protected%20by%20UNESCO&text=The%20two%20organizations%20have%20carried,hewn%20churches%20of%20Lalibela%2C%20Ethiopia.) forces to accelerate the documentation and ensure the protection of Jewish cultural heritage worldwide. The initiative will comprises a number of activities, including mapping and assessing the condition of Jewish heritage sites and formulating recommendations to improve their preservation and management, as well as the organization of a travelling exhibition devoted to Jewish heritage sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. The purpose of the initiative is to index cultural sites as well as sites of memory and Jewish documentary and linguistic heritage, in all its extraordinary diversity. Long Description ---------------- ***Scope*** In carrying out his/her tasks, the Consultant shall work in close cooperation with several Entities and Sectors within UNESCO, including relevant UNESCO Field Offices, as well as the World Monuments Fund (WMF). ***Overview of the functions of the post*** Under the general authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture, the direct supervision of the Director of the Culture and Emergencies Entity, and in close coordination with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the Individual Consultant shall: Long Description ---------------- - **\[Mapping\]** Develop thorough mapping of documentation efforts by international and national entities, including organizations and foundations, focusing on the protection and preservation of Jewish cultural heritage globally; - **\[List of organizations\]** Compile a comprehensive list of international and national organizations that have been actively involved in projects related to the documentation and safeguarding of Jewish cultural heritage; - **\[Assessment of the state of documentation\]** Undertake a detailed assessment of the current state of documentation for both movable and immovable Jewish cultural heritage, also by identifying existing gaps and needs. In this context, a special attention shall be paid to uncovering any regional discrepancies in the documentation and protection of Jewish cultural heritage, particularly focusing on Central Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Arab world; - **\[Priority sites\]** Identify and prioritize sites of Jewish heritage in urgent need of safeguarding and rehabilitation, especially in the aforementioned regions. - **\[Recommendations\]** Based on the findings, propose strategic recommendations aimed at enhancing the documentation, preservation, and management of Jewish cultural heritage. These recommendations should contribute towards the development of a comprehensive inventory of Jewish cultural heritage worldwide.
