You have:

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in a field of public international law, required.
  • Minimum of ten years of relevant working experience in the field of international humanitarian law, required.
  • Proven communication, research and organizational skills, desired.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, desired.
  • Direct experience in advising on the implementation of international humanitarian law treaties, desired.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Fluency in another UN language is an asset.

Result of Service

By the end of the project, the consultant will have drafted and finalized the study on the protection of the environment in the context of the CCW and its Protocols, in close coordination with UNODA Geneva, incorporating feedback received. The document should be prepared in English.

Duties and Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: In close coordination with UNODA Geneva, draft the study on the protection of the environment in the context of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) and its Protocols; The specific tasks are as follows: - To identify and describe the existing and applicable international legal and normative framework relating to the protection of the environment and armed conflicts, including the ILC Draft Principles on the Protection of the Environment in relation to Armed Conflicts (the Draft Principles) and the ICRC Guidelines on the Protection of the Natural Environment in Armed Conflict (the ICRC Guidelines), with a particular focus on the impact of the weapons falling under the scope of the CCW and its Protocols. - To identify and explain how contamination of the environment by weapons falling under the scope of the CCW and its Protocols relate to/hinder the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. - To identify and explain how the CCW and its Protocols can be used to further the goal of protecting the environment before, during and after an armed conflict, including in particular its post-conflict remedial provisions in combination with the applicable international legal frameworks on the protection of the environment in relation to armed conflicts; - Finalize the study for publication.
