Overview

Draft and finalize the study on incendiary weapons regulation in relation to the CCW.

You have:

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in a field of public international law is required.
  • Minimum of ten years of relevant working experience in the field of international humanitarian law is required.
  • Proven communication, research and organizational skills is desired.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons is desired.
  • Direct experience in advising on the implementation of international humanitarian law treaties is desired.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Fluency in another UN language is an asset.

Result of Service

By the end of the project, the consultant will have drafted and finalized the study on the regulation of incendiary weapons in the context of the CCW and its Protocols, in close coordination with UNODA Geneva, incorporating feedback received. The document should be prepared in English.

Duties and Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: In close coordination with UNODA Geneva, draft the study on the regulation of incendiary weapons in the context of the CCW and its Protocols; The specific tasks are as follows: - Conduct a comprehensive review of the types and use of incendiary weapons in armed conflict and assess/discuss their humanitarian impact; - Examine and explain the status of incendiary weapons under international legal frameworks, including their current regulation under international humanitarian law; - Identify gaps in the existing legal/international humanitarian law framework on incendiary weapons; - Evaluate the effectiveness of the CCW Protocol III in regulating the use of incendiary weapons; - Elaborate a proposed set of recommendations for enhancing the regulation of incendiary weapons, including in the context of the CCW and its Protocols; - Consult closely with UNODA along the drafting process and to capture feedback; - Finalize the study for publication.
