Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

To mark the occasion and build momentum for gender equality and women’s rights, UN Women took forward the Global Gender Equality Forum – Generation Equality, in March and July 2021. The events galvanized all stakeholders to implement actions that remove the most egregious barriers to gender equality. The Forum brought together civil society and the women and young people of the world, gender equality advocates from all walks of life, in a global public conversation on the urgent actions that need to be taken for the realisation of gender equality.

The key outcomes of the Generation Equality Forum, from Mexico to Paris set out the feminist agenda-setting for the next five years. The six ‘Action Coalitions’ were launched for scaled-up and urgent action focused on critical issues to accelerate gender equality achievements. UN Women will maintain a critical role driving the Forum’s 5-year action journey, ensuring robust monitoring and accountability for implementation of the commitments made, including through dedicated internal capacity. In India, Generation Equality Forum presented an opportunity for civil society together with feminist youth to launch a feminist pathway and vision 2026, presenting key recommendations on how to accelerate the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) with an intersectoral and intergenerational lens. UN Women convened national and regional conversations to localise Action Coalitions blueprints. The Action coalition themes were built through a series of dialogues and online campaigns. UN Women helped youth activists and youth-led organisations, movements, partners, and allies to organise and participate in advocacy before, during, and after the GEF in Paris. UN Women supported commitment makers to develop the commitment pitch and continues to support for implementation of commitments. This includes commitments from youth led organisations across six thematic areas and youth feminist leadership building in India. The programme will focus on building young feminist leadership in the policy and public advocacy spaces by:

  • Developing a comprehensive feminist leadership manual and toolkit on a policy-advocacy, with a focus on select areas of work such as Access to Justice, Ending Violence Against Women and Girls, Women’s Economic Justice and Rights, and Bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • Developing individual and institutional capacities on feminist leadership principles (This will be done through the literature review of the existing curricula on feminist leadership; and mapping exercise to understand the needs of youth leaders; in the current scenario)
  • Training Youth feminist facilitators on normative frameworks and global norms and standards that exist to accelerate the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of women, such as CEDAW, and CSW.

UN Women and National Alliance of Women's Organisation (NAWO) have committed to: 1) invest in building youth leadership and increasing their meaningful participation in intergovernmental processes and global agenda-setting platforms; 2) build ownership and action by youth leaders for policy shifts; and 3) set up monitoring processes on progress against global and national commitments by the Government on the shared mandate of Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls

National Alliance of Women (NAWO) and UN Women will mobilise young gender activists who will drive local youth mobilization in the spirit of Generation Equality and beyond. Feminist movement and leadership building; increased and meaningful youth & women’s leadership; youth participation in intergovernmental processes and global agenda-setting platforms are identified as an overarching priority in the global Generation Equality framework. To advance this agenda, UN Women will work closely with the National Alliance of Women (NAWO), a national network of women to take leap into the next generation of leaders by creating a youth led NAWO chapter. The programme will be a step forward by building on the centrality of youth led and grassroots organizations and solidarity networks in intergovernmental processes. The programme will invest in youth leadership and participation of young leaders’ youth led organizations, especially those from marginalized communities that are disproportionately affected by structural barriers and gendered discrimination; ?and by forging solidarity-based multi stakeholder partnerships.
