Result of Service 1. The SUN 2022-2025 project has a transparent process for the collection and analysis of data from UN entities. 2. SUN has improved resources and outreach efforts on fleet management, biodiversity, ICT, and facilities. 3. The SUN team has improved tools and processes for project and team management.

Expected duration The contract duration is for Six Months from 1 July to 31 December 2022. The consultancy and the payments will be made based on deliverables

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Sustainable UN (SUN) team has a mandate to support UN organization’s internal operations shift to more environmentally sustainable management.

The team operates via the Issue management Group on Environmental Sustainability management (hereafter IMG Network) of over 50 UN entities that meet regularly to exchange best practices, develop harmonized methodologies and report jointly on their progress towards the UN corporate environmental sustainability goals. As the ambition and methodologies grow there is an increased need for improved support and facilitation of data collection on entity and UN-system wide progress on targets and indicators identified in the Sustainability Strategy and the QCPR.

The UNEP SUN team has an ambitious programme in 2022 to assist IMG network members in the implementation of emissions reduction strategies in UN organisations and to inform senior management of these efforts. The Consultancy will cover aspects of the UN 2020-2030 Sustainability Strategy (environmental sustainability in the area of management) such as Environmental Management Systems, biodiversity, fleet management, and facilities, and ICT.

The SUN team needs finally project management support concretized via the participation in meetings and discussions with the IMG, EMG, and EOSG as requested. Additionally, the SUN team needs assistance in the preparing expert input in preparing meetings with Senior management on the Sustainability Strategy, QCPR, and UN Reforms. Finally, SUN colleagues need support in preparing strategic documentation and organizing meetings on EMS, ICT, facilities, Biodiversity related outputs and activities.

Specific tasks and responsibilities:-

Project planning process for SUN Inventory collection, evaluation, and reporting of data in line with targets and indicators of the Sustainability Strategy I a. Review current data collection and reporting process, discuss with SUN and others as appropriate to identify needs b. Engagement on the development of new collection modality to ensure SUN team input is properly reflected and milestones are met c. Draft report and presentation outlining approach for further incorporation of Strategy I indicators and targets into unified reporting modality - Interim 30 September, Completed, 30 December

Three status reports on progress related to SUN engagement on Fleet, Biodiversity, ICT, and Facilities. a. Organise and participate in network meetings related to biodiversity, fleet, ICT, and facilities and provide updates to SUN team b. Present to and provide input to Networks on relevant GtB/SUN tools and initiatives c. Management of pilot projects and development of new approaches/tools for SUN on these issues. d. Coordinate SUN team inputs to relevant networks and processes - First status report due 30 July, Second Report due 30 September, Third Status Report due 30 October

Three Reports on help desk, project management, and technical inputs provided to SUN team for their engagement with UN entities, and/or Senior management related requests on Environmental Management Systems, biodiversity, fleet management, ICT, and facilities. a. Organise and contribute to meetings with SUN, IMGs, EMGs, and EOSG as appropriate, providing updates related to work on EMS, biodiversity, fleet, staff awareness, ICT, and facilities as requested. b. Provide inputs for communication to senior management, including annual Greening the Blue letters or similar presentations, on the above topics c. Engage SUN team members to ensure balance of work among team members and that sufficient resources are available to deliver on tasks and meet deadlines related to EMS, fleet, ICT, facilities and related communication products. d. Provide inputs to SUN project management reporting as required (PIMS, etc.), First report due August 30, Second report due October30, Third report due December 30

Reporting lines The consultant shall report directly to Ms. Isabella Marras, Coordinator, Sustainable UN (SUN) facility. Final deliverables shall also be approved by Mr. Jamil Ahmad, Director UNEP New York Office

Place of work The assignment will be carried out remotely. In between, daily/weekly contact by Skype, phone conference or e-mail are envisaged.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: - A Masters’ degree in an environmental field, environmental science or engineering, development or social sciences Experience: - Required: o Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience in one or more of the following: environmental management, climate action, sustainable facilities; project management. o Experience in writing, editing and producing understandable and accurate technical materials

  • Desired: o Knowledge of the UN system and culture and familiarity with the UN interagency networks is desired. o Creative, autonomous, and resourceful strategist with a track record of proactivity. o Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Exposure to cross cultural and multi-ethnic working environment. o Ability to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources. The candidate should demonstrate professional competence in data analysis. The candidate should have the ability to deliver outputs and work under pressure. o Ability to follow directions and use personal judgement in delivery of relevant products by deadlines agreed upon; Language: - For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
