The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Global Communication & Advocacy (DGCA) comprises Web Editorial, Social Media News and Campaigns, Digital Governance and Platforms teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, the Digital Strategy Section draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability. Web stories, blog posts, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via UNICEF.org, UNICEF Connect, YouTube, news media and other outlets and platforms are all a part of our digital storytelling.

The Digital Strategy Section is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, as well as providing support to Country and Regional (field) Offices to maximize their use of global web platforms in their communications activities. This role is instrumental in ensuring our large and globally distributed user base has access to web platforms, and is supported to use these platforms to publish high quality content that is critical to their communications work.

How can you make a difference?

Reporting to a Senior Web Editor, and under the guidance of the Head of Web Editorial, the Web Writer & Editor is responsible for creating compelling web content and acting as the unicef.org focal point for UNICEF’s global advocacy goals related to Health and Immunization. Aligned with global digital strategies, this role is responsible for managing major sections of the website and for developing and implementing the web components of global campaigns around Health and Immunization. This includes writing, editing and producing meaningful web content to drive digital engagement; developing campaign pages; maintaining evergreen sections of unicef.org; editing human-interest stories and blogs; researching and developing content for the UNICEF Parenting Hub; coordinating closely with colleagues on social media, multimedia, advocacy, digital marketing and partnerships; liaising with Regional and Country Offices to align content; and conducting monitoring and evaluation of web analytics.

In Brief

  • Drive the planning, writing, production and maintenance of engaging and meaningful web content for global advocacy priorities focused on immunization and health, including COVID-19 and COVAX, as well as daily management of key sections on the global unicef.org website.
  • Strategize to effectively reach UNICEF’s target audiences through search, SEO and engagement with social media channels and digital marketing – as designated by integrated campaign objectives.
  • Lead on writing engaging web content, producing pages, monitoring analytics to inform strategy, and crafting engaging content from key organizational messages.
  • Monitor digital analytics, including the development of baselines and benchmarks, and optimize organic search traffic through ongoing audits and keyword research.
  • Ensure web content is aligned with UNICEF’s 'voice', messaging and strategic direction, paying attention to sensitive issues and maintaining UNICEF style and factual accuracy.
  • Perform other digital communication and content duties as assigned by supervisor.

    Advocacy and Campaigns

  • Act as a focal point for campaigns and major sections of the unicef.org website for advocacy goals related to health and immunization.

  • Establish and manage a web presence for global advocacy priorities focused on immunization and health, in line with digital best practices, including on-page SEO and a focus on the target audience(s) and user experience.
  • Conceptualize, develop and write campaign pages and content for activations related to immunization and health to drive digital engagement and advance advocacy goals.
  • Support digital and web editorial planning and processes, including work with platforms team and alignment with Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish digital producers.
  • Liaise with colleagues in the areas of digital marketing, social media, multimedia and design to support integrated digital campaigns and dissemination strategies.
  • Work with the Digital Strategy Section’s M&E team to measure and report on web efforts to guide web content and strategy related to the aforementioned campaigns.

    Evergreen and Programme Content

  • Ensure health- and immunization-related unicef.org webpages remain globally engaging, relevant, accurate, and judicious.

  • Work closely with subject-matter experts in UNICEF’s Programme Group to keep webpages up to date with the latest “what we do” narrative, key advocacy messaging, and technical data.
  • Uphold UNICEF and the UN’s editorial principles by editing and writing text that: is considerate of, and accessible to, readers of various backgrounds; adheres to UNICEF’s child safeguarding practices; and accounts for all forms of contextual sensitivities.
  • Regularly review web analytics (Google Analytics and other platforms) to evaluate performance and reach of web content, and advise on iterative strategies for search engine optimization (SEO), user experience, and design.
  • Closely monitor upcoming UNICEF reports, data analysis and press releases to ensure statistics on webpages remain up to date and consistent with content published across all UNICEF channels, including social media platforms and other UNICEF subsites.

Parenting Hub, Human-Interest Stories and Blogs

  • Collaborate with UNICEF Country and Regional Offices to edit and produce human-interest articles related to UNICEF’s health and immunization programmes, in line with UNICEF’s global ‘voice’ and editorial standards. Work closely with UNICEF Programme and Partnership teams to edit and produce health- and immunization-related blogs, in line with UNICEF’s blog guidelines.
  • Produce practical and engaging content for UNICEF’s Parenting Hub (including explainer articles and expert interviews). Conduct keyword and desk research to inform content development, coordinate the review and update processes, track performance and optimize.

Web Analytics, CMS, SEO, Etc.

  • Produce and revise content on Drupal, UNICEF’s global content management system.
  • Regularly monitor Google Analytics, SemRush, SiteImprove, and other third-party platforms to evaluate performance and reach of web content and make recommendations to improve search engine optimization (SEO), user experience, and design.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced University Degree (Master’s or higher) in International Communications, Writing, Journalism, International Development, or related field.
  • Or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in digital communications, journalism, publishing, or related field.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

  • Strong track record of writing and editing for international, digital audiences
  • Knack for distilling technical information into accessible, compelling storytelling
  • Sound understanding of behavioral metrics for digital content, especially Google Analytics

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4. At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.
