Scope of Work:

In West and Central Africa, UNICEF works with partners across the region to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of global goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. Gender Equality (Goal 5) is one of the 17 SDGs which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. UNICEF’s contributions towards reaching Goal 5 focuses on embedding gender equitable results across all programming to ensure that there is an end to discrimination against women and girls everywhere and enable children grow, learn and thrive, regardless of their gender.

To achieve this, UNICEF West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) has made gender a cross-cutting theme in all the Key Results for children based on in its Regional Office Management Plan (ROMP) and UNICEF global Gender and Action Plan 2022-2025 (GAP). The WCARO Gender Team has been supporting country in 3 main areas: 1) strengthen gender transformative programming: Capacity strengthening of staff and partners on how to do gender transformative programming, and 3) institution strengthening to support COs in the implementation of the 8 GAP standards.

The consultancy is planned within a 3-month deliverable basis.

Purpose of Activity/Assignment: Support the Meeting Planning Committee and the Regional Gender Advisor with the design and organization of the WCAR Gender Network Meeting scheduled to take place 19-22 September 2023.

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Social Studies, Development studies, or Public Health. *A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of At least 3 years of experience in gender programming
  • Understanding of UNICEF’s programming in the West and Central Africa Region (WCAR).
  • Prior work experience with UNICEF in WCAR is an asset.
  • Organization skills and capable of working on multiple assignments simultaneously and adapting to changing demands of different stakeholders.
  • Good communication (verbal and written) skills, Networking savvy.
  • Experience in organizing UN workshops and/or programmatic events
  • Client-first approach and problem-solving.
  • Fluency in French and English is required.

    • Costs for each deliverable and total all-inclusive (lump sum) fees for the whole assignment

  • At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.
  • Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
