The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication comprises Web Editorial, Social Media News and Campaigns, Digital Governance and Platforms teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, the Digital Strategy Section draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability. Web stories, blog posts, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via UNICEF.org, UNICEF Connect, YouTube, news media and other outlets and platforms are all a part of our digital storytelling.

The Digital Strategy Section is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, as well as providing support to Country and Regional (field) Offices to maximize their use of global web platforms in their communications activities. This role is instrumental in ensuring our large and globally distributed user base has access to web platforms and is supported to use these platforms to publish high quality content that is critical to their communications work.

How can you make a difference?

The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) seeks to hire a Junior Social Media Editor consultant responsible for assisting the Social Media team in the creation of compelling social media content and the day-to-day management of UNICEF’s social media channels, including the Executive Director’s Twitter account (@UNICEFChief). The consultant will support the planning, development and implementation of dynamic, interactive and meaningful social media content strategies applicable to daily community management as well as campaigns; assist Content Strategists in the creation and coordination of key social media campaigns, engagement strategies and tactics, including use of “live” coverage on social media; and help coordinate with colleagues on digital marketing, influencer and digital partnership engagement, monitoring and analysis, and moderation of platforms.

  • Help produce compelling content for @UNICEFChief and @UNICEF’s global social media channels, including Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and Facebook.
  • Help schedule, proofread and check social media and digital content for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Support the planning, development and implementation of dynamic, interactive and meaningful social media content strategies for campaigns and daily community management on UNICEF’s global social media.
  • Assist in the project management of social media engagement initiatives, online and in person, including but not limited to the use of “live” coverage and activations on platforms, youth takeovers, user-generated content calls to action, etc.
  • Produce and schedule social media content and packs, crafting engaging content from key messages.
  • Help improve @UNICEFChief and @UNICEF’s agility when it comes to reacting to and riding the waves of relevant media (or social media) moments that relate to UNICEF's mandate, especially tied to campaign and organizational priorities.
  • Support in digital and social media editorial planning and processes with relevant colleagues working in the areas of digital marketing, influencer engagement and management of UNICEF’s Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish social media channels.
  • Help produce social media content, including for paid marketing activations if applicable.
  • Help work with graphic designer as needed to produce visuals and infographics.
  • Assist with the monitoring and moderation of social media channels, flagging risk and opportunities to deepen engagement, including some out of hours/weekend shifts and during emergencies.
  • Support other teams in HQ and offices worldwide on their day to day social media efforts.
  • Help the Digital Strategy Section’s M&E consultant to measure and report on social media efforts.
  • Identify new opportunities to continually improve our presence across digital platforms to deepen engagement with supporters, particularly young people.
  • Help keep track of efforts and activities of other UN agencies, non-profits and competitors, identifying content to be amplified and shared on @UNICEFChief and @UNICEF’s platforms.
  • Perform other digital communication and content duties as required and agreed upon with supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Relevant Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Social Science, Humanities, or a related field
  • 3+ years’ experience working on social media content
  • Proven ability to write flawless, tight social copy on constant deadlines
  • Strong social copy-editing skills
  • Familiar with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok
  • Strong creative disposition and understanding of what’s ‘shareable’ online
  • Experience in reporting on quantitative and qualitative social analytics
  • Strong ability to manage multiple priorities within specified timeframes
  • Awareness of social media communication behaviors in developing regions/countries
  • Track record of developing social media content and campaigns that achieve strong engagement
  • Experience using Hootsuite
  • Understanding of digital marketing and fundraising strategies a plus
  • Experience of capacity building and training a plus
  • Experience in working for the UN, UNICEF or with International NGOs or global organizations is a plus but by no means essential
  • Must have excellent command of English (native speaker preferred). Working knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Arabic a plus.

Remarks:

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4. At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
