Specific study objectives (based on existing data markets analyses)

The operational study will seek to respond to the following four key questions:

  1. Map women’s priority market interventions (various forms of formal and informal markets)
  2. Map women’s preferred market engagements
  3. Map barriers to women’s participation in specific markets improved economic activities and market engagement
  4. Analyze social norms, perceptions and expectations that shape, constrain, or promote women’s economic empowerment.

Based on women’s contributions, develop a gender action plan including actor specific recommendations and measurable indicators to improve women’s empowerment and engagement with markets in selected areas of the project.

Activities

  • Background desk/ literature review, including identification of pre-existing programme documents (for markets/ gender related)
  • Develop methodology based on exchange with programme teams
  • Study development (tools, guideline, data collection and analysis)
  • Develop a SMART indicator-based action plan
  • Workshop to present and discuss the results, develop a measurable action plan based on SMART indicators
  • Monitoring and evaluation (use of evidence)

Deliverables

  1. Completed analytical tools:
  • Detailed methodology
  • Detailed methodology
  • All tools used for data collection available
  1. Study report
  • Methodology, results, recommendations
  • Visualized graphics/ images/ presentation demonstrating women’s barriers/ enablers to different forms of markets
  • Timebound, smart recommendations
  1. Indicator based recommendations and monitoring proposal:
  • Proposed feasible tools to monitor and apply recommendations

Observations

  • Partners will be provided with a maximum of seven days to review and respond to proposed tools
  • Tools should be reviewed with a specific focus on how the results and questions will be used to adapt and improve the response (operational) and inform programmes
  • Co-develop recommendations and actions based on evidence
  • Monitor the percentage of codeveloped recommendations based on evidence which have been actioned
  • Evaluation and feedback will be shared within six weeks of the collection with programme partners, and recommendations and actions codeveloped to inform and improve the overall response strategy

Minimum Qualifications required:

  • Master’s in development studies, Gender studies, Socio-economic specialisations (economics focused within humanitarian contexts)
  • 8 years of experience in humanitarian programs development based on markets analysis and gendered data
  • 4/5 years in conducting gender market mapping analysis for humanitarian and development programming.
  • 8 years of experience and capacity to work with locally recruited data collectors (training/ capacity building).
  • Must have previously conducted gender markets mapping exercises in French speaking sub-Saharan Africa
