Result of Service The consultant will prepare the following outputs: - Summary notes of working sessions and meetings of the core team (roughly 1 per month); - Substantive materials such as background notes, promotional and informational materials, talking points, presentations for plenaries and parallel sessions, scenarios for opening and closing sessions and plenaries, and guidance for speakers; - List of proposed sessions based on collated accepted submissions; - Final programme with plenary and parallel sessions.

Expected duration The consultant will work during the period from 29 July 2022 to 31 January 2023.

Duties and Responsibilities The 3rd International Forum on Migration Statistics will facilitate exchange of experiences and best practices in the official statistics community and beyond. It will also promote coordination and harmonization of international migration statistics across countries by showcasing the recently revised conceptual framework for statistics on international migration and mobility, endorsed by the UN Statistical Commission in 2021. The Forum, scheduled to take place from 24 to 26 January 2023, will result in a fertile exchange of good practices, methodologies, lessons learned and emerging knowledge for developed and developing countries. Thus, the 3rd International Forum on Migration Statistics will be one of the landmark events for DESA in 2023, reconfirming its position of a thought leader in the realm of migration statistics and data.

The objective of this consultancy is to provide substantive support to the organization of the 3rd International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS2023). The consultant will liaise with members of the organizing core team (OECD, IOM, DESA), participants as well as ECLAC, as the host the Forum, in activities leading to its organization.

The consultant will undertake the following tasks: i. Draft background notes and other substantive material (such as talking points, templates, scenarios, promotional materials, etc.) for the core team, scientific committee, group of partners and various stakeholders of the Forum; assist in convening organizational meetings, contribute to the meetings and prepare related summary notes. ii. Monitor the evaluation of received proposals for abstracts and parallel sessions, based on thematic relevance and methodological soundness; and provide substantive advise the Scientific Committee and the core team in the evaluation process. iii. Liaise with counterparts, in particular the host of the Forum, support local staff, scientific committee, invited sessions’ organizers and prospective plenary speakers. iv. Coordinate and put together the programme for the Forum, including substantive content of the plenaries assigned to DESA, definition of parallel sessions based on accepted proposals, communication with speakers, and selection of proposals to be accepted as posters, blog entries and/or online sessions leading up to the Forum. v. Prepare a shortlist of speakers and participating experts. vi. Prepare, revise and edit substantive materials for the Forum’s website and post them, in conjunction with IT colleagues in UN Statistics Division, and facilitate other substantive and organizational aspects of the Forum.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in sociology, statistics, demography or related field. A graduate certificate on migration or related field is desirable. Experience: - A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in international migration data, statistics, concepts, definitions, and statistical texts, tables and charts is required. - Experience interacting with multiple stakeholders is desirable. - Experience of working with the United Nations is desirable. Language: Full command and ability to speak and write in English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is desirable.
