Overview

Support the organization of the 3rd International Forum on Migration Statistics.

You have:

  • Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in sociology, statistics, demography or related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in international migration data, statistics, concepts, definitions, and statistical texts, tables and charts.
  • Full command and ability to speak and write in English and Spanish.
  • Experience interacting with multiple stakeholders is desired.
  • Experience of working with the United Nations is desired.
  • A graduate certificate on migration or related field is desirable.

Result of Service Phase 1: Summary notes of working sessions and meetings of the core team (roughly 1 per month) Technical specifications for the Forum’s website and consolidated feedback on them. Substantive materials such as scientific committee invitation letters and other ad-hoc documentation.

Phase 2: Summary notes of working sessions and meetings of the core team (roughly 1 per month) Substantive materials such as online form for call for abstracts, concept note for overall Forum (key themes), and other ad-hoc documentation.

Phase 3: Summary notes of working sessions and meetings of the core team (roughly 1 per month) Consolidated list of abstracts, and control table for abstract review by scientific committee. Letters, concept notes for invited sessions, plenaries, presentations and other ad-hoc documentation.

Phase 4: Summary notes of working sessions and meetings of the core team (roughly 1 per month) Detailed list of proposed sessions based on collated accepted submissions Online form for registration of participants. Consolidated draft programme with plenary and parallel sessions.

Expected duration The consultant will work during the period from 19 November 2021 to 30 June 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities Background and Objectives

The project entitled Collection and use of international migration data in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, funded by the 11th tranche of the UN Development Account has as overall objective, in support of monitoring progress under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to strengthen national capacity in collecting and compiling comprehensive and internationally comparable migration data that meet international standards, and to enhance understanding of the uses and limitations of migration data for policy purposes. More specifically, in collaboration with partner organisations, the project aims to improve data availability through technical capacity building of countries in producing basic migration statistics, statistics on human trafficking and socioeconomic statistics disaggregated by migratory status for the SDG monitoring.

The objective of this consultancy is to prepare and conduct outreach on best practices (activity A1.8 of the project) and, in particular, provide substantive and administrative support to the organization of the 3rd International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS2022). The consultant will liaise with members of the organizing core team (OECD, IOM, DESA), participants as well as the host country of the Forum in activities leading to its organization.

The 3rd International Forum on Migration Statistics will facilitate exchange of experiences and best practices in the official statistics community and beyond. It will also promote coordination and harmonization of international migration statistics across countries by showcasing the technical materials that have been produced under the project (A1.2). The Forum, scheduled to take place in late 2022, will result in a fertile exchange of good practices, methodologies, lessons learned and emerging knowledge for developed and developing countries. Thus, the 3rd International Forum on Migration Statistics will be one of the landmark events for DESA in 2022, reconfirming its position of a thought leader in the realm of migration statistics and data.

The consultant will undertake the following tasks: i. Draft background notes and other substantive material (such as talking points, templates, scenarios, etc.) for the core team, scientific committee, group of partners and various stakeholders, assist in convening organizational meetings, contribute to the meetings and prepare related summary notes. ii. Assist in preparing letters, concept notes for invited sessions, plenaries, call for abstracts, presentations and other documentation. iii. Conduct preliminary substantive assessment of submitted abstracts for review by the core team and the scientific committee, and collate accepted submissions into a proposal of coherent sessions. iv. Liaise virtually with counterparts, in particular the host country of the Forum, and support local staff. v. Assist in the coordination and assembly of the programme, including call for abstracts, support to the scientific committee, communication of acceptance or rejections. vi. Assist development of the Forum’s website, including drafting technical specifications, liaising with external consultant(s), IT colleagues in UNSD and consolidating feedback from colleagues and stakeholders. vii. Assist with preparing a shortlist of speakers and participating experts.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in sociology, statistics, demography or related field. A graduate certificate on migration or related field is desirable. Experience: - At least 3 years of experience in international migration data, statistics, concepts, definitions, and statistical texts, tables and charts is required. - Experience interacting with multiple stakeholders is desired. - Experience of working with the United Nations is desired. Language: Full command and ability to speak and write in English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is desired.
