Introduction

Generation Unlimited (GenU) is a multi -sectoral partnership established in 2018 to ensure that every young person aged 10-24 is either in education, acquiring skills training or in employment by 2030. In Kenya, the partnership was officially launched on 5th August 2020 by H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta who is also the Global Leader for young people’s agenda. It brings together the private sector, governments, international and local organizations – and young people – to identify and scale the best solutions for three major challenges: access to secondary age education, acquisition of employability skills, access to employment opportunities and empowerment.

Generation Unlimited (GenU) Kenya Secretariat is seeking an exceptional writer and creative professional to assume the role of a Communication Specialist Consultant. The overarching goal of the communication support is to enhance the participation of the young people and stakeholders towards the realization of GenU’s vision by ensuring they are regularly provided with valuable information and news and events.

Activities, Tasks, Outputs and Deliverables

Under the general guidance and supervision of the Deputy Representative, the individual contractor has the following key functions/accountabilities:

  • Lead the implementation of GenU Kenya Communication and Outreach Strategy aligned to the Action Plan 2020-2021.
  • Coordinate partnership communication for GenU to enhance stakeholder commitment, dialogue, and engagement.
  • Showcase young people’s leadership in co-designing and co-creating solutions.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The work of the Generation Unlimited Kenya Secretariat is communicated effectively with key stakeholders and the public, including young people.

  1. Lead the implementation of the GenU Kenya Communication and Outreach strategy aligned to the Action Plan 2020-2021.
  • Oversee the development and production of strategic communicational and brand materials to promote GenU Kenya Secretariat, liaising with the programmes teams and identifying and managing vendors.
  • Oversee the content creation and management of GenU Kenya Secretariat digital properties, including social media and web.
  • Provide communication support for GenU Kenya Secretariat events, including GenU Kenya Steering Committee meetings and other key events identified annually.
  • Develop and edit feature and news stories, blogs and web content.
  • Ensure monitoring of implementation and effectiveness of the strategy, taking corrective action when and where necessary to minimize risk and maximize results.
  • Prepare mid and annual reports on the strategy implementation as well as reports on the results of priority activations and events.
  • Build relationships with existing and potential contributors for communications outlets and provide leadership on engagement with non-traditional media.
  1. Coordinate partnership communication for GenU Kenya Secretariat
  • Ensure a regular flow of information to create awareness and grow the partnership, using communications materials to encourage commitments, dialogue and engagement.
  • Generate communication materials, partnership tool kits, official briefing materials, presentations, and other necessary engagement materials.
  • Ensure the quality, consistency and appropriateness of communication materials and messages is shared with partners.
  • Work proactively with partners across GenU to identify opportunities for communication, advocacy, youth engagement and sharing information about major progress and results.
  • Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learned by conducting content gathering visits to project activities/events to collect and document high-quality case studies and photo stories.
  • Assist in the identification of opportunities for cooperation and potential contributions of GenU partners and potential partners.
  • Generate quality minutes and notes from all GenU Kenya Secretariat meetings in attendance
  • Coordinate closely with the staff working within other technical areas of the GenU Kenya Secretariat for synergies/ collaboration.
  • Monitor, evaluate and share results and findings with partners of communication and advocacy strategy.
  1. Profile young people’s leadership in co-designing and co-creating solutions
  • Oversee the design and implementation of content that features the views of young people on GenU Kenya Secretariat Action plan workstreams and engagement in GenU leadership and initiatives.
  • Support the development and implementation of youth engagements aligned to the GenU Kenya workstreams

  • Oversee regular posting and engagement of young people through social media platforms.

Selected Key Milestones/deliverables:

  1. Production and dissemination of GenU Kenya branding and communication materials.
  2. Timely implementation of GenU Kenya Communication and Outreach Strategy which leads to increased commitment, dialogue and engagement.
  3. Quality and relevant communication materials and content for partners information, the website and social media channel such as brochures, fact sheets, case studies, newsletters, impact reports, briefs, speeches, statements, articles, talking points, op-eds etc.
  4. Regular exchange of communication information between GenU Kenya partners through written communication materials, videos and photos.
  5. Bimonthly media engagements through media briefs, published compelling stories/ articles, interviews etc.
  6. Existence of an informative and interactive website on GenU Kenya process and interventions.
  7. Monthly Communication Progress Reports.

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

  • A minimum of seven (5) years of professional experience in communication strategy development and implementation.
  • Experience in engagement and partnership with the media sector is a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated expertise in website management, preparation of newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, annual reports, research analysis, speeches, minutes, press releases, feature stories, social media engagement content and other external communication.
  • Experience in desktop editing/ publishing, copy editing, and production will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with the use of popular social media platforms and understanding of digital media, photography and video editing will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to write succinctly and clearly and speak in public forums.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required, strong written and verbal competency is necessary.
  • Advanced university degree in one of the discipline below
