TITLE:
CONSULTANCY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL TRAINING MANUAL FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS
GRADE:
NOC
CONTRACT DURATION:
1.5 months
BACKGROUND:
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are among the most common causes of illness globally and have far-reaching health, social and economic consequences. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates over 200 000 fetal and neonatal deaths each year due to syphilis in pregnancy, 266,000 cervical cancer deaths each year due to Human Papilloma Virus.
STIs are of public health importance because of their magnitude, potential complications, and interaction with HIV/AIDS. STIs are also said to affect women's health and social well-being by producing a significant impact on their reproductive potential.
In Sierra Leone, there is limited data on the prevalence of STIs in the general population. The 2019 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS 2019) showed that 22% of women and 14% of men who had ever had sexual intercourse reported having had a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and/or STI symptoms in the 12 months preceding the survey. DHS 2019 also showed that 58% of women and 53% of men who had an STI or STI symptoms sought advice or treatment from a clinic, hospital, private doctor, or other health professional. Seventeen percent of women and 23% of men sought advice or medicine from a shop or pharmacy, while 26% of women and 24% of men did not seek any advice or treatment.
In 2020, WHO Country Office supported the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to develop National Guidelines for Sexually Transmitted Infections. The use of updated and standardised STI management guidelines is strongly recommended in order to ensure standard quality treatment and prevention at all levels of the health system. It also provides clear guidance, facilitates training and supervision of healthcare providers, and assists in effectively managing STI drugs and related supplies.
