Result of Service

The consultant, home-based, reports to the global manager of the UN Free and Equal campaign, who is based at OHCHR Headquarters in Geneva. The campaign works to support the work of OHCHR to strengthen the protection, respect, and fulfillment of the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) people, in line with international human rights standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant reports to the global manager of the UN Free and Equal campaign. Within delegated authority, the consultant will be responsible for the following duties, working the equivalent of a total of 18 days per month/8 hours a day:

Content Creation • Prepare, draft, and obtain clearance for compelling social media content and new digital and social media initiatives, potential schedules for UNFE´s social media editorial calendar, collaborations, and campaigns to grow UN Free & Equal’s digital community, engaging new audiences and sustaining/increasing when possible existing followers. • Design and create multimedia products (e.g., videos, motion graphics, animations, photography, infographics, and a diverse range of visuals for effective storytelling across the UN Free & Equal campaign’s digital platforms, undertaking research and advising on appropriate medium and target audience). • Adapt and format digital content such as graphic design, image files, and video for use on UNFE´s social media platforms and website as required. • Assist with updates to the campaign website as required. • Prepare and obtain clearance for social media plans and other initiatives when required, write drafts, proofread, obtain clearances, and finalize texts, copy edit, and follow-up on content and design approval, printing procedures, and distribution of printed communications materials and multimedia assets. • Align all content and initiatives proposed for clearance to UNFE´s strategic communication and public information strategies, key messages, and positions. • Conduct research on social media best practices and strategies and provide regularly specific insights, analysis, and advice.

Community engagement and moderation • Undertake activities to implement the UN Free & Equal campaign’s presence on a range of major multimedia and social media platforms. • Identify issues and trends in digital media and advise on appropriate actions, opportunities, and initiatives to populate and plan UNFE´s editorial calendar. • Monitor and moderate social media channels, ensuring timely posting, and flagging risks and opportunities to deepen engagement, including some out-of-hours/weekend shifts and emergencies. • Identify and advise on new opportunities to continually improve our presence across digital platforms to deepen engagement with supporters. • Keep track of activities of other UN agencies and non-profit partners, identifying and advising on content to be amplified and shared on UN Free & Equal’s platforms. • Support as required in providing regular analytics reports, in close coordination with other consultants/staff, and provide recommendations on tactics to improve UN Free & Equal’s digital presence.

Analytics for social media channels (and backup for web), and Trello management • Under the guidance of UNFE´s manager, produce regular analytics reports and analysis for UNFE´s social media channels to monitor and evaluate relevant key performance indicators, and perform as a backup for UNFE´s website analytics when required. • Manage all aspects of UNFE´s Trello (or equivalent platform) to ensure timely updates of assets and content, and all needed actions to provide access to UNFE´s team, partners, UNFE´s national campaigns, relevant UN colleagues, and others as needed.

Backup and other tasks • When required, perform as a backup of other members of the team as necessary, including to implement tasks to update UNFE´s website, draft diverse products (such as factsheets and others), and support to provide website analytics reports, coordinate the translations of assets and products, and manage UNFE´s Trello (or equivalent platform). • When requested, provide support to implement mini-campaigns and diverse initiatives, including follow-up, conceptualization, and implementation in close coordination with vendors, partners, and members of UNFE and OHCHR. • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

First degree in communication, journalism, public relations, or related field (or in law, human rights or international relations, or related field if there is demonstrable experience working in communications and content production) A minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience in digital and social media, communication and public relations is required, with proven experience in copy editing. • Experience working on human rights and on the rights of LGBTIQ+ people is desired. • Strong written and oral communication skills, including experience in copywriting for social media and the web, and the ability to tailor messaging in alignment with the campaign's branding, strategic messaging, and mission is required. • Experience and strong strategic communications judgement in terms of messaging, tone, and style for different contexts and needs. • Knowledge of and experience with the Adobe suite design programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Premier) • Excellent production and creativity skills. • Excellent copy-editing skills. • Experience working with the UN system is an asset

Languages

Fluency in English. Fluency in additional UN languages is an asset.
