Background

The Child Protection and Development (CPD) team within the Data and Analytics Section covers a number of topics including birth registration, child labour, child marriage, female genital mutilation, violence against children and children living outside of family care. The CPD team work in the area of child protection includes: supporting the collection of nationally representative data through the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS); maintaining global databases on key protection indicators; methodological work to develop new data collection and monitoring tools and questionnaires in the area of child protection, including on issues measured by SDG indicators; conducting data analyses; and disseminating data on child protection in a variety of ways including through flagship publications, thematic data-driven publications and brochures and statistical country profiles.

The purpose of this consultancy is to provide support to the CPD unit on several different projects with regards to tasks that include data compilation, preparation of charts/tables, drafting of key messages and other short pieces of text, fact-checking, and proofreading/review of publications.

Scope of Work

The consultant is expected to support the preparation of a number of data-driven products by conducting data compilation, preparing draft charts/tables/maps and drafting accompanying key messages and technical notes, drafting short pieces of text, fact-checking, and proofreading/reviewing publications during the design/layout stage.

Terms of Reference

  1. Data compilation for up to 20 indicators on child marriage.

    Creating/updating of charts and drafting key messages on child marriage.

    Proofreading and reviewing child marriage publications at design phase.

    Fact-checking of child marriage publications.

Deliverables

  • Data on up to 20 child marriage indicators compiled for 4 publications.
  • Charts and key messages prepared for up to 100 figures at national, regional and sub-national level.
  • Proofread versions of 4 publications (50 pages, 30 pages, 30 pages and 40 pages).
  • Fact-checked versions of 4 publications (50 pages, 30 pages, 30 pages and 40 pages).

    Proofreading and reviewing ECD publications at design phase

  • Charts and key messages prepared for up to 80 figures at national and regional and global level
  • Updated version of 15-page literature review on VAC and mental health; up to 5 textboxes on VAC and mental health topics drafted
  • Proofread versions of 2 publications (30 pages each)
  • Fact-checked versions of 2 publications (30 pages each)

Respond to ad hoc data requests as needed, including data compilation, preparation of charts, reviewing of drafts and fact-checking of CPD publications

Deliverables

  • Data on 12 FGM indicators compiled for 31 countries
  • Comments and review of implementation template provided
  • Fact-checked versions of 4-page profiles for 31 countries
  • Data on up to 45 ECD indicators compiled for 197 countries
  • Fact-checked versions of 1-page profiles for 197 countries
  • Ad hoc requests fulfilled as needed

(1) Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in public health, demography or social science field

2) Work experience

  • A minimum of three (3) years proven professional work in research, social sciences, public health, or demography is required.
  • Strong technical and analytical writing skills in English is required.
  • Previous experience with conducting literature reviews is required.
  • Demonstrated previous experience with data compilation and preparation of charts/tables/maps for reports and publications is required.
  • Previous experience working with UNICEF or other UN partners is an asset.

Requirements****:

  • Completed profile in UNICEF's e-Recruitment system and provide Personal History Form (P11) Upload copy of academic credentials
  • Financial proposal that will include:
  • your daily/monthly rate (in US$) to undertake the terms of reference and deliverables.
    • travel costs and daily subsistence allowance, if internationally recruited or travel is required as per TOR.
    • Any other estimated costs: visa, health insurance, and living costs as applicable.

  • Any emergent / unforeseen duty travel and related expenses will be covered by UNICEF.
  • At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.
  • Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.

U.S. Visa information:

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. The candidate may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid).
