About UNICEF

If you are a committed, creative professional and are passionate about making a lasting difference for children, the world's leading children's rights organization would like to hear from you. For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments. UNICEF has over 12,000 staff in more than 145 countries.

Background

UNICEF engages with business to promote and integrate child rights throughout a company’s operations. For the first time, we are partnering with companies to develop and adopt policies that have a positive impact on promoting diversity and inclusion of the most marginalized and vulnerable groups. The standards that result from such policies and an improved environment (regulatory and otherwise) will foster a more inclusive society and have a positive impact on children’s development and well-being. UNICEF approach towards promoting diversity and inclusion derives from the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) leave no one behind framework that seeks to empower those who are being left behind [or who are at risk of being left behind]; and to enact inclusive, far-sighted and progressive SDG-linked policies.

The ‘champions’ are companies that are ready and willing to take a leadership role in holistically addressing issues that affect children – including through implementation inclusion and diversity policies in product development, marketing and entertainment. Through the development and practice of diversity and inclusion policies, UNICEF’s objective is to create replicable models of guidance that can be applied to and reach companies across a variety of sectors.

In engagement with a champion company, UNICEF uses its expertise to collaboratively develop knowledge and produce ongoing assets, for example, a set of core principles and definitions; workshops to introduce UNICEF’s toolkits; a ‘playbook’ identifying global best practices and case studies; and guidelines that provide direction on the degree of flexibility that should (or should not) be offered in distinct markets and cultures when approaching diversity and inclusion. The final product is a documentation of the journey towards more inclusive and diversity policies, products and marketing that can be shared with a range of stakeholders, including with other United Nations agencies and businesses.
