The role of DFAM is to safeguard the financial resources entrusted to UNICEF for the survival, development and protection of the world’s children by maintaining and improving financial and administrative systems and procedures to ensure efficient, cost-effective and transparent utilization of these resources. DFAM is based in New York. The Division is divided into five sections that carry out accounting and financial reporting, facilities management and administration, budgeting, cash and treasury management, and divisional coordination, liaison and management activities.

The consultant will support the Accountants in the Financial Reporting Unit in the preparation or review of accounting instructions and provide support in preparation of financial analysis and reports. This role will further develop analytical and transactional skills while allowing participation in project work and providing support to senior colleagues.

How can you make a difference?

The key tasks of this consultancy are:

  • Preparation of key financial areas in the Q2 and Q3 2021 quarterly financial as assigned. This also includes identification of areas needing follow up and resolution with other HQ units, COs or business process owners as may be needed.
  • Assist Financial Reporting Unit in preparation of year end closure.
  • Maintain UNICEF’s master data; specifically general ledger accounts. Ensure that there are adequate controls in place in establishing master data based on UNICEF’s risk management policies and that it remains accurate and valid by performing periodic cleansing activities. Update the chart of accounts, and maintain the related glossary of definitions, as required and in compliance with IPSAS.
  • Oversight over the process of daily review of financial reporting cubes and ensuring all cubes are run timely and following up with IT in case this is not the case.
  • Perform and support system periodic processes and closure activities, researching issues, trouble shooting errors and following up with HQ Divisions and Offices on outstanding monthly and quarterly activities related to periodic processes.
  • Liaise with IT, other HQ sections/divisions and field offices on system issues and reporting requirements based on instructions and solutions provided by supervisor. Contribute to identification of possible solutions to systems issues and reporting requirements. Support the design of financial systems structures.
  • Review and/or preparation and running of monthly UNICEF Trial Balance and ensuring reconciled to the FI cube. This will include follow up on SAP system issues identified which may require resolution.
  • Assist in documentation, formatting and preparation of accounting manual with guidance from the business process owner.
  • Assist in preparation of responses to the UN Board of Auditors (UNBoA) interim audit queries in their relevant area as needed.
  • Any other projects and adhoc activities as identified by the supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Education: Professional certification as chartered accountant (CA) or certified public accountant (CPA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), or any other internationally recognized accounting designation is required. Candidates working towards the accounting designation with greater than 5 years’ experience, in financial statements preparation/reporting or audit in conjunction with accounting degree may be considered in lieu of the professional accounting certification.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
