Contract

This is a Consultancy contract. More about Consultancy contracts.

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, hope

In the second half of 2020 UNICEF conducted a wide review of how to accelerate results for children. As part of this review, a number of transformational and enabling strategies were identified. One of these strategies recommends to significantly step up the use of audience specific integrated marketing and communication in order to drive improved supporter and partner engagement (“supporter engagement”) and, through offering them stronger engagement journeys, grow income and influence.

This shift is in line with the move to more deliberate ‘purpose marketing’ happening across the non for profit sector. “Focusing marketing to the domains of raising awareness and raising funds might have been enough to get buy in the past, but it’s not enough today. If (…) wants to advance its mission and drive meaningful, measurable change, marketing simply must be integrated into everything you do.”

While UNICEF has skilled teams and staff working on marketing and supporter engagement, there is a need to increase synergies, better teaming-up, clarifying accountabilities and streamlining ways of working - thus enhancing the collective impact of the work. A teamed-up way of working across teams is expected with colleagues working in a ‘partnership of equals’ in line with UNICEF’s core values (Care, Respect, Integrity, Trust, Accountability).

How can you make a difference?

Under the sponsorship of the Director, PFP, and the leadership of the Chief Marketing and Communications, PFP, the consultant will lead the work to deliver recommendations on how a reinforced, teamed up approach to marketing, communications and supporter engagement can be best implemented in PFP and across the cone. The vision is that this new approach:

  • I****s built on a joined-up audience-led supporter/partner marketing strategy, tools, and assets - generating stronger loyalty and deeper engagement from partners and supporters who will feel even more valued and recognized.
  • Leverages the full potential of the expertise and skills of all teams involved and builds on the strengths and complementarities of all its actors.
  • Enhances the collective impact through increased synergies and a ‘one-voice’ approach.

  • Demonstrates how an integrated approach across fundraising, comms, advocacy and marketing can bring strong results to all.

DELIVERABLES

We are looking for recommendations on how to evolve the current functions, roles and responsibilities and accountabilities to deliver excellent marketing leadership with the ultimate purpose to contribute to maximizing resource mobilization and influence.

  1. As part of the above, sense check on the current proposed shifts in the PFP marketing and communications section and offer advice on tweaks/changes to structure.

  2. As part of the above, a review of three comparators with the objective to benchmark against the current- and evolved UNICEF set up.

  3. As part of the above, review the overlapping/complementary functions in three PFP teams, and recommend best structures and workflows for efficiency and maximizing results.

  4. As part of the above, a review of 3 UNICEF National Committees and 3 Country Offices to explore if the proposed new arrangements and structure will fit the needs of support and capacity building of those national offices.

  5. As part of the above, recommendations on accountabilities, roles, and responsibilities, inter-relations and information flows (e.g. way of working with relevant stakeholders).

The methodology to achieve the above outcomes is to be defined by the consultant and agreed by UNICEF in the first 10 days of the work.
