The Global Philanthropy team in the Division of Private Fundraising and Partnerships (PFP) has focused primarily on capacity building in National Committees and Country Offices to date. In order to develop new income opportunities and capability to achieve defined targets in key markets, the Global Philanthropy team is investing in a consultancy assignment to directly support the Global Philanthropy New Business Manager in the creation and management of UNICEF's first Global High Value Capital Campaign to specifically target new Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) philanthropists and Family Foundations globally.

How can you make a difference?

Under the guidance of the Global Philanthropy New Business Manager and in collaboration with National Committee, Country Office and Capital Campaign Steering Committee colleagues, the consultant will support on the project management of all elements of the ‘quiet phase’ of the Capital Campaign creation in order to ensure a successful public launch of the Campaign in 2022.

MAIN TASKS

Campaign Prospect Identification and Coordination:

  • Work with the Global Philanthropy New Business Manager to prepare agendas and materials for UNICEF Capital Campaign Steering Committee meetings documenting and distributing key action items.
  • Build relationships with Steering Committee members, working with them 1:1 to gain key insights from their respective markets.
  • Work with the Global Philanthropy New Business Manager to establish an external Capital Campaign Board; working in partnership with the Steering Committee to identify and approach potential Board members from existing networks within the global UNICEF Family.
  • Schedule meetings, prepare talking points, assemble presentations and support the New Business Manager and Steering Committee in the management of the Capital Campaign Board.
  • Research and compile a long list of individual prospects identified by both the UNICEF internal Steering Committee and the Capital Campaign Board.

Monitor global trends and developments in Philanthropy

  • Monitor global and regional trends and developments in philanthropic Capital Campaigns to ensure UNICEF creates a strong and robust Capital Campaign case for support when benchmarking against competitors.
  • Maintain a network of contacts in multiple geographic regions in order to identify the strongest potential markets for the public Campaign launch in 2022.
  • Ensure all materials created are culturally appropriate and align with fundraising regulations in key markets
  • Monitor competitor performance and movements in the top 10 philanthropy centres of wealth globally.

Prepare cases for support

  • Work with UNICEF programme teams to gather detailed programme information to create timelines and budgets in order to create a template for the Capital Campaign case for support.
  • Create a range of tiered proposal options for prospects capable of supporting the Capital Campaign at a $20M- $500k level.
  • Write compelling cases for support and other donor communications which can be readily distributed and adapted for global prospects interested in supporting the Capital Campaign.
  • Include a full package of materials needed but not limited to elevator speeches, Q&A materials and tiered proposals.
  • Work with the New Business Manager to create a gift pyramid in order to inform the number of approaches needed at what level to reach the Capital Campaign target within the agreed timeframe set.

DELIVERABLES

  • Map a prospect list of key philanthropists and UHNWI/families for whom the Capital Campaign would be a compelling ask to share with the Capital Campaign Board.
  • Work with an external agency to create a suite of bespoke and tailoring marketing materials for the Capital Campaign suitable for a UHNWI audience.
  • Ensure that all elements of the ‘quiet phase’ of the Capital Campaign are adequately supported to ensure a successful public launch of the Capital Campaign in 2022.

ESTIMATED DURATION OF THE CONTRACT AND PROPOSAL

11.5 months, full-time, tentatively starting in March 2021.

Education

  • Advanced university degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, Business Administration or related field is required.
  • Alternatively, a first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of five years relevant professional work experience in major gift fundraising including experience of personally soliciting six figure gifts from UHNWIs, is required.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of fundraising and philanthropy is required, as is an understanding of international development.
  • Direct experience of working on a high value Capital Campaign is essential, ideally from the creation and inception of a Campaign during the quiet planning phase.
  • Experience of managing Campaign Boards and experience of working in international organizations, are additional assets.
  • Knowledge of the UN system is an advantage.
