You have:
- Up to three years of demonstrated interest in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
- Previous experience as a volunteer.
- Knowledge of local forms of volunteerism in Kyrgyzstan.
- Ability to communicate in Kyrgyz and Russian; English is an advantage.
- Understanding of ethical standards and values.
Contract
This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including par-ticipation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Under the direct supervision Under overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Kyrgyzstan and the direct technical supervision of Assistant FAO Representative in the KR, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: UN Volunteers should be provided equal duty of care as extended to all host entity personnel. Host entity support to the UN Volunteer includes, but is not limited to: • Introductory briefings about the organisation and office-related context including security, emergency procedures, good cultural practice and orientation to the local environ-ment. • Support with arrival administration including setting-up of bank accounts, residence permit applications and completion of other official processes as required by the host government or host entity. • Structured guidance, mentoring and coaching by a supervisor including a clear work-plan and performance appraisal. • Assist in emergency preparedness procedures such as evacuations. • Participate in the organisation and follow-up of meetings and consultations and the production of required materials • Participate in the organisation of workshops, seminars and training and the coordination and production of related information materials. • All changes in the Description of Assignment occurring between recruitment and arrival or during the assignment need to be formalized with the United Nations Volunteer Programme.

Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.
Bishkek is the capital and the largest city of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan is in Central Asia, west of China. The climate is dry continental to polar in the high Tien Shan Mountains, subtropical in the southwest (Fergana Valley) and temperate in the northern foothill zone. The official languages are Kyrgyz and Russian. Kyrgyz is dominant in state circles and is more widely used in the south and in rural areas. Russian is preferred by most business partners. The Cyrillic alphabet is commonly used for public notices, including road signs and street names. English is used in business circles and in the government. Hotels and restaurants frequented by foreigners usually have some English-speakers. Interpreters are readily available. The main religions are Islam and Christianity. The security risk in Kyrgyzstan is medium to high. The currency of Kyrgyzstan is the Som (KGS). Medical service is cheap by Western standards, Kyrgyz hospitals are not of a standard comparable with Western hospitals The main way to travel around the country and inside the cities are buses, rout taxis (marshrutka) and taxis. It is possible to ride them both in large and small cities and between cities. Furnished and semi-furnished apartments are the most common housing options. A semi-furnished apartment may require kitchenware, linen and small appliances. A fully-furnished house will include everything needed to live comfortably.
