The Republic of Congo is a middle-income country experiencing a period of economic growth in a context marked by ambitious reforms. Over the past decade, the average growth rate has been about 6%. However, if the current drop in oil prices were to continue, this momentum could be halted. It should be noted that macroeconomic results are at odds with the living conditions of the majority of the population, which remain difficult. Unemployment, especially among young people, remains high and the cost of living is quite high compared to other countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the food needs of the population in large cities are covered by imports.

Peace and security have improved considerably. However, two levels of security are defined for the Republic of Congo: •Level 2 in Brazzaville, Pointe - Noire and the Pool region; •Level 1 in the rest of the territory.

The UN Volunteer will be based in Brazzaville, the capital. It is a quiet city where daily life is safe and where you can move freely. Food and non-food items are easily accessible. Health facilities are up to standard. Apartments outside the United Nations Complex must be approved by the Security Department of the WHO Regional Office in Brazzaville.

The WHO Regional Office for Africa is located in the southern suburbs of Brazzaville. A shuttle bus ensures that staff travel between home and work at specific times.
