In order to heighten community vigilance for reporting EVD alerts and adhering to COVID 19 prevention protocols ,including early signs and symptoms, unknown deaths, and prevent rumours from spreading among the general public, UNICEF is supporting the Risk communication and Community engagement Pillar of the Incidence Management System to conduct robust Community Engagement activities through consultative meetings, community dialogues , advocacy and social mobilization with county and community stakeholders for EVD preparedness and prevention and COVID 19 prevention in all 15 counties in line with the National preparedness and response plans.Among several Community engagement activities advocacy is central to any public health intervention. Its importance is even more significant during public health emergencies such as COVID 19 and EVD in helping the affected or community exposed to threats understand the risks they face and involves them in response actions that are acceptable. timely, trusted, clear and effective. These communication and engagement approaches are critical to ensure fear, panic and rumors do not undermine response efforts and lead to a disease spreading even more quickly. Community volunteers also play a critical role in social mobilization in their communities. and by being the agents of change themselves, they inspire and act closely with communities; they can facilitate/lead efforts in prevention, communication, awareness, and sensitization campaign and by extension, promote social cohesion in communities.

Community volunteers will be assigned to the C4D unit at UNICEF Liberia and will work closely with the County Health Teams as part of the United Nations System's joint response to COVID-19 in Liberia, the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia.

Under the direct supervision of the C4D Specialist, within the C4D Unit, the UN Community Volunteer will:

• support the intervention to effectively respond to COVID19 and EVD preventive activities, and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia and the County Health Teams the UN Community Volunteer will perform the following tasks:

• In collaboration with the County Health Teams, carryout dissemination of key messages and provision of health information on COVID-19 and EVD prevention using different communication strategies including community distribution of flyers, sensitization etc.

• Mobilize youth in communities to support identification of new household members from different localities & support contract tracing

• Organize meetings with local authorities, health workers, women, youth and refugees on the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in implementing COVID-19 response, consistent with national response plan

• Assist health workers in targeted communities to facilitate community access to COVID-19 and EVD related medical services including psychosocial support.

• Support to vulnerable groups to be directed to the nearest medical services available in their areas for their needs.

• Contribute to the collection of COVID 19 infection data in communities and report it to relevant health authority.

• In coordination with other networks at the local level, the Community Volunteers mobilizers will collect data on the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 and support with the conduct of surveys on community perceptions.

• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Liberia, Africa's oldest Republic, is located at the western edge of the continent, on the Atlantic coast between Sierra Leone and Côte d'Ivoire. The population of Liberia is approximately 4.5 million and contains about 16 different ethnic groups. A large percentage of Liberia’s population live in the capital. The UNV will be based in Monrovia the capital city of Liberia.

The climate features a wet season and a dry season, but precipitation is seen even during the dry season. Temperatures remain constant throughout the year averaging around 26.4 °C (79.5 °F). Some visitors may feel cold during the day and evenings in the rainy season; also, most rooms are air-conditioned, so it is suggested that appropriate clothing (light sweater or jacket) be brought along.

The country is generally safer, except for petty crimes, especially in the cities. It is mandatory to complete the United Nations Security course BSAFE. The current UN security level for Liberia is level 2. Upon arrival in the country, all UN staff receive a security briefing from UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS). Security recommendations from UNDSS must be followed by all UN Staff and UN Volunteers during their assignments in Liberia. There are hotels and guesthouses in various county capitals that are comfortable and has electricity and security. All UN Staff and UN Volunteers are to use only UN-approved guest houses and hotels.

A gym is also available at the One UN House for all categories of staff based on the presentation of the UN ID Card
