In the Pacific we work in Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu: These 14 Pacific island countries are home to 2.3 million people, including 1.2 million children and youth, living on more than 660 islands and atolls stretching across 17.2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean, an area comparable to the combined size of the United States of America and Canada.

UNICEF field offices are established in FSM, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands to support the multi-country programme in the Pacific region. This Communication for Development Officer post will be based in the North Pacific Field Office to support the team on communication for development and communication and advocacy activities.

How can you make a difference?

The Communication for Development Officer reports to the Chief of Field Office (and second reporting line to Chief of C4D & Chief of Communication, Suva) for technical supervision and guidance.

There are two key areas of the role:

  • Provide technical and operational support on Communication for Development activities in FSM, Palau and RMI by administering, executing and implementing a variety of tasks to promote community engagement and participation, and measurable behavioural and social change/mobilization.
  • Assist in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating an advocacy and communication strategy to get children’s and women’s issues into the public domain in support of UNICEF's mission and objectives in the North Pacific, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.

  1. Support to UNICEF Pacific communication, advocacy and communication for development strategies at country level
  2. Advocacy, media management and partnership building
  3. Capacity building and systems strengthening initiatives
  4. Innovation, Monitoring & Evaluation and Knowledge management

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in one of the following fields or relevant experience is required: social and behavioral science, sociology, communication, journalism, public relations or another relevant technical field.
  • A minimum of two years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas is required: communication for development, communication, print and broadcast media, social development programme planning, advocacy or another related area.
  • Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
