Result of Service ¿ A quarterly digital newsletter and draft material for the content of the second Newsletter with visually appealing design and engaging content. ¿ Contribute web content and updates for the Anti-Racism page of the relevant website on a regular basis. ¿ Contribute, on behalf of the Anti-Racism Team to peacekeeping and field operations communications strategy on anti-racism, including key messages, identification of target audiences, and recommended tactics.

Work Location The Individual Contractor will work remotely and maintain regular communication with the Anti-Racism Team and relevant stakeholders.

Expected duration This Individual Contract is expected to be for an initial period of three months, starting immediately, with a possibility of an extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities Background

Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships: This Individual Contract is located in the Anti-racism Team (ART) in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Management Strategy, Policy, and Compliance. ART is responsible for high-level oversight, coordination, monitoring, advocacy, and mainstreaming of the Strategic Action Plan implementation efforts in all departments and offices.

The Secretary-General is committed to zero tolerance and organizational action to address racism and racial discrimination and the equal treatment and full inclusion of all United Nations personnel in the work of the Organization. He has therefore launched a Strategic Action Plan on Addressing Racism and Promoting Dignity for All in the United Nations Secretariat (hereafter the "strategic action plan") to tackle this abhorrent behaviour.

Under the supervision and guidance of the Communications and Engagement Officer, the Communications Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Objective :

The objective of this Individual Contract is to design and create quarterly digital newsletters for various entities and target groups the Anti-Racism work will aim at, prepare web content for internal communication and awareness for the Secretariat and Member States, and contribute to the elaboration drafting an anti-racism communications strategy targeting peacekeeping and other field operations.

Responsibilities: Design and Create Quarterly Digital Newsletters in English and French: ¿ Develop a visually appealing newsletter template that aligns with the Anti-Racism Team branding and guidelines. ¿ Liaise with the Anti-Racism Team to gather content, updates, and success stories for the quarterly newsletter. ¿ Organize and present the information in a clear and engaging manner. ¿ Incorporate multimedia elements, such as images, videos, and infographics, to enhance the newsletter's visual appeal. ¿ Ensure the newsletters are accessible and compatible with various digital platforms and devices. ¿ In accordance with UN drafting guidelines and institutional rationale, proofread and edit the content for accuracy, grammar, and accepted norms. ¿ Coordinate with relevant stakeholders for timely approvals and distribution.

Prepare Web Content for Internal Communication and Awareness: ¿ Create compelling and informative content to promote awareness and understanding of Anti-Racism initiatives among Secretariat staff and Member States through internal communications tools such as Yammer and iSeek. ¿ Collaborate with subject matter experts to gather relevant developments, information and updates. ¿ Write engaging articles, blog posts, and news pieces on Anti-Racism events, campaigns, and best practices. ¿ Ensure the web content reflects the Organization's values, goals, and messaging.

Support Drafting the Anti-Racism Team’s Peacekeeping and other field operations Communications Strategy: ¿ Collaborate with the Anti-Racism team and relevant stakeholders to develop a comprehensive communications strategy for peacekeeping and field operations. ¿ Conduct research and analysis on best practices and emerging trends in peacekeeping internal outreach communications. ¿ Identify key target audiences, communication channels and gatekeepers for anti-racism messaging in peacekeeping and field operations. ¿ Assist in drafting clear and impactful messages and narratives to promote anti-racism efforts in peacekeeping and field operations. ¿ Provide recommendations on effective communication tactics and tools. ¿ Ensure alignment with the Anti-Racism Team overall communication strategy and objectives.

Qualifications/special skills Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.

Experience in web content management systems and digital communication tools is required.

Experience in the UN system is desirable.

Experience in Peacekeeping communications is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
