You have:

  • Advanced University degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications or other relevant fields, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses.
  • Fluency in English language with strong problem-solving and communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Basic understanding of communications techniques, use of photography and video editing software for social media posts.
  • Experience in producing articles for online and traditional media, and contributing to the planning or roll-out of campaigns.
  • Good computer knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work in a team with a diverse set of backgrounds.

At WFP, we are looking for a Communications Officer hired on a Service Contract (SC-8) in Bridgetown, Barbados to implement the communications plan by supporting and delivering a range of communications activities, and providing research and analysis.

This position will be under the supervision and mentorship of the Partnerships Officer.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  1. Contribute to the design and implementation of communication work plans designed to maintain and improve the visibility and reputation of WFP.
  2. Contribute to communications through research, analysis, and timely preparation and distribution of information products to the target audiences.
  3. Nurture continuously a contact list of journalists and media outlets and support the flow of information about WFP’s work to the media, to ensure regular and appropriate communications.
  4. Support the development and roll-out of the social media plan by developing a calendar with the corresponding content, and utilising platforms, networks and partners to improve coverage and support of WFP’s activities.
  5. Generate donor-specific visibility content including, text, photos, videos and audio for use across a range of coordinated online platforms, to support global and country fund-raising activities.
  6. Manage and analyse different communication channels to advise the development and evaluation of communication activities.
  7. Guide and supervise more junior staff, acting as a point of referral and supporting them with more complex analysis and queries.
  8. Collate outreach data and contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely reports.
  9. Support communications activities that enable informed decision making and ensures consistency of information presented to the media and other partners.
  10. Support capacity building of WFP staff to ensure that all activities meet desired standards of consistency, quality and impact.
  11. Collaborate closely and interact with WFP staff and external counterparts to support aligned activities and a coherent approach to communications within WFP.
  12. Follow standard emergency preparedness practices to support WFP to quickly respond and deploy food and needed resources to affected areas at the onset of a crisis.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced University degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications or other relevant fields, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses. For Advance Degree holders, a minimum of one year of meaningful professional experience is required. For First Degree holders, three years of meaningful experience are required.
  • Fluency (level C) in English language. Strong problem solving and communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Has a basic understanding of communications techniques, and has used basic photography and video editing software to build social media posts. Experience with graphic design and videography software is considered an asset.
  • Has experience in producing articles of online and traditional media, and has contributed to the planning and/or roll-out of campaigns.
  • Good computer knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are required.
  • Great teammate and ability to work in a team with a diverse set of backgrounds.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • This vacancy is open to citizens of Barbados or CARICOM Member States. Relocation support will not be granted.
  • The selected candidate will be employed on a Service Contract (SC-8) for twelve months that does not carry any expectancy of renewal.
