THE ROLE AND ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

This position is based at WFP’s Office to the European Union, in Brussels. As a Communications Officer, you will work under the supervision of and closely alongside the head of the Brussels Communications Unit and another communications officer. You will also work closely with the global Communications, Advocacy & Marketing Unit at WFP Headquarters in Rome and build strong relationships with communications and partnerships officers around the globe and with communications focal points and other partners inside the various EU institutions.

PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

As a Communications Officer you will, using strong communications work, increase policymaker's and the public's awareness of WFP’s mandate, and enhance the visibility of WFP’s partnership with the European Union. You will provide accurate technical advice on European Union visibility and communications requirements to colleagues within WFP, develop an understanding of the political context within which EU funding operates (and how visibility expectations are connected to it), and will produce high quality visibility material to showcase the WFP/EU partnership.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

  • Support the implementation of the communication work plan to promote the visibility and reputation of WFP, in line with overall communications and WFP strategies
  • Contribute to communications through good research, analysis of assigned area of work and timely preparation and distribution of information products to target audience(s), as well as ongoing WFP/EU visibility activities
  • Maintain and actively contribute to a contact list of EU-focused and Brussels-based journalists and media outlets and assist in the flow of news/information about WFP’s work to the media, in order to support regular and appropriate communications
  • Support the social media plan by coordinating and contributing to the development of social media content, and utilising platforms, networks and partners to enhance coverage and support of joint EU/WFP activities and WFP activities in general.
  • Contribute to, disseminate, and provide insight on the generation of donor specific visibility content including, text, photos, videos and audio for use across a range of integrated online platforms and offline events, in order to adhere to EU visibility guidelines and contractual requirements while ensuring consistency with corporate messages.
  • Monitor and analyse traditional and social media to support senior managers in the development and/or evaluation of communication activities and strategies concerning EU visibility.
  • Contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely reports, support communications activities that enable informed decision making and assist on verifying consistency of information presented to the media and other stakeholders.
  • Support the communications function’s capacity building of WFP staff on proposing (bidding for contracts) and implementing EU visibility work, contributing advice and guidance within area and level of expertise, in order to assist staff in ensuring that all activities meet desired standards of consistency, quality and impact.
  • Liaise and interact with WFP staff and external counterparts to support aligned activities and contribute to a coherent approach to EU visibility communications within WFP.

QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

You have:

  • Advanced University Degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or other relevant field, OR First-level University Degree with additional years of related work experience, and/or trainings/courses

EXPERIENCE:

You have:

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant professional experience (especially related to partnership visibility activities with the EU)
  • Proven experience in donor / partner visibility work, especially with European Union humanitarian and development actions and “above-standard” visibility actions and campaigns
  • Experience in supporting remote communications and partnerships teams in creating communications & visibility plans and strategies as part of a new or continuing contract with a partner
  • Experience in European Union reporting and contractual requirements, especially as concerns communication
  • Experience in planning, gathering and producing tailored multimedia content

LANGUAGE:

You have:

  • Fluency (level C) in the English language and either in French or Dutch.

MORE ABOUT YOU

  • You have excellent written & verbal communication in English
  • You have experience in working with external agencies to produce visibility content on behalf of a donor
  • You are willing to provide help as needed with other related duties on communications related procurement work
  • You have the capacity to build and sustain effective collaborative relationships

ADDITIONAL / NICE-TO-HAVE REQUIREMENTS

  • An eye for identifying opportunities on emerging social media platforms and new ways of producing content
  • Familiarity with WFP and the UN system will be regarded as an asset

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • This position is open to Belgian nationals only.

  • You will be appointed on a National fixed-term (1 year renewable) contract. Remuneration is in line with the UN salary scale for National Officers (see: UN Salaries-Belgium).

  • Medical insurance is provided to UN Staff and dependents (incl. spouse, child(ren). Your package includes attractive leave entitlements, including 30 annual leave days per year and family leave options.
