Job Title: Communication Officer

Type of Contract: Consultancy

Division: RAM-RAMAC

Duty Station (City, Country): Home-based remote

Duration: 6 months

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The Climate and Earth Observation (ClEO) Unit of the Research, Assessments and Monitoring (RAM) division undertakes the analysis of remote sensing data across the full range of spatial resolutions. By leveraging satellite data and monitoring from above, our geospatial analysts observe growing seasons, provide climate analyses, assess refugee and IDP camp status, detect land cover changes across regions and countries where WFP operates in. WFP has a long history of natural hazard risk management both as a humanitarian response agency, and increasingly as a provider of technical support to governments. Through several technology innovation projects, WFP has developed platforms to monitor weather related hazards and their impacts through the use of remote-sensing data, socioeconomic data from surveys, and field assessments collected on mobile devices. Among these projects, the PRISM platform has grown from pilots in Indonesia and Cambodia to a more mature system focused on integrating data from various sources to monitor extreme weather events risks and impact. Additionally, the technology for processing Earth Observation data at scale has grown significantly. This has led WFP to develop and deploy an instance of the Open Data Cube, the Humanitarian Data Cube, as a centralized platform to work with Earth Observation data at scale.

A scale-up of PRISM is underway under the leadership of the Climate and Earth Observation (ClEO) team within the Research Assessments and Monitoring (RAM) division in Headquarters. The scale up of PRISM and its integration with the Humanitarian Data Cube (HDC) is a key strategic focus for WFP’s use of innovation for monitoring extreme weather events and supporting better climate and disaster risk management.

The Asset Impact Monitoring from Space (AIMS) service, run jointly by ClEO and the Asset Creation, Livelihoods and Resilience (PROR-L) unit, uses satellite imagery and landscape monitoring techniques to evaluate WFP’s Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) programmes.

Under the supervision of the head of the ClEO unit, the incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the communications activities of the unit, including supporting AIMS, PRISM and HDC on strengthening their advocacy strategy, as well as developing visual products.
