Job Title Communications Officer

Duty Station Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Duration 6 months


The Communications officer will work under the supervision of the WFP Haiti Head of Communications to implement the communications plan by supporting and delivering a range of communications activities, providing research and analysis, and prioritising effectively.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, within delegated authority):

  1. Under the supervision and guidance of the WFP Haiti Country Office Head of Communications, implement country specific communication work plans designed to maintain and enhance the visibility and reputation of WFP, as well as support fundraising activities, ensuring alignment with overall communications and WFP strategies.
  2. Maintain a social media calendar and web content plans of content themes and all upcoming coverage schedules according to the calendar.
  3. Support the social media plan by developing content, and utilising platforms, networks and partners to enhance coverage and support of WFP’s
  4. Prepare social media packs for flagship events, initiatives, campaigns.
  5. Generate donor specific visibility content including, text, photos, videos and audio for use across a range of integrated online platforms, in order to support global activities and country fund-raising activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages.
  6. Monitor and analyse traditional and social media to inform the development and/or evaluation of communication activities and strategies.
  7. Support the flow of news/information about WFP’s work to the media, in order to support regular and appropriate communications.
  8. Contribute to communications through good research, analysis of assigned area of work and timely preparation and distribution of information products to target audience(s).
  9. Support capacity building of WFP staff on all aspects of communication, provide advice and guidance within area and level of expertise, in order to ensure that all activities meet desired standards of consistency, quality and impact. For example the design and review of training materials.
  10. Liaise and interact with WFP staff and external counterparts to support aligned activities and a coherent approach to communications within WFP.
  11. Follow standard emergency preparedness practices to support WFP to quickly respond and deploy food and needed resources to affected areas at the onset of a crisis.
  12. Other as required.

  • Stories, social media posts, videos, images, infographics, photos posted to digital channels
  • Social media calendar created and adhered to

  • Other content for media, WFP Haiti web page and other platforms

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

Advanced university degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, Political science or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.

Experience:

  • Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in a relevant field of work, preferably in an NGO or other UN agency/organisation, with a background and interest in international humanitarian development;

    • Strong experience in digital content creation, management of social media channels (mainly Twitter) and strategic analysis of social media performance
    • Experience in ensuring donor visibility requirements are met;
    • Experience with graphic design, ability to create designs for digital media purposes in open source graphic design programmes, such as Canva;
    • Ability to take quality photographs and basic photo editing skills
    • Knowledge and understanding of local and global digital landscape and trends;

    Competencies:

  • Sound theoretical understanding of relevant concepts and principles with a broad knowledge of best practices, techniques and processes;

    • Strong organisation skills with the ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan;
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to persuade, influence and adapt communication style to different situations and individuals;
    • Good advocacy and negotiation skills with the ability to persuade, influence and adapt communication style to different situations and individuals;
    • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain good working relationships internally and externally;
    • Knowledge of common business principles and processes and the ability to quickly assimilate UN/WFP specific processes and systems;
    • Ability to analyse and interpret information, identify trends, and provide solutions;
    • Ability to rapidly analyze and integrate diverse information;
    • Understanding of programme planning and implementation processes; and
    • Ability to apply partnering approaches.

    Languages:

    Fluency (level C) in English and at least intermediate (level B) French.
