OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Department of Communications (DCO) objectives are to lead the development of the corporate communications strategy and plans, drive prioritization of efforts to achieve the expected impact for WHO; position WHO as the authoritative and trusted voice on health at the global level through working with technical departments at the headquarters, regional and country offices; lead external and internal communications through media and digital outreach, incl. crisis/ emergency communication, partnerships with digital and creative platforms; drive all communication to the general public as well as WHO's strategic stakeholders; lead on global advocacy (e.g. health campaigns, public health information, donor visibility for resource mobilization); provide digital global production capacity & expertise to support all levels of the organization; strengthen the WHO brand from inside out through communication capacity building and impactful storytelling.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Head of the Strategy, Planning and Coordination Unit, the incumbent will be primarily assigned to support the development, coordination and strategic analysis of the WHO communications strategy implementation, WHO brand guidance, management, compliance and support.

This role requires strategic communications and analysis, experience in public health communications, media and digital skills and brand design.

Strategic communications:

  • Develop WHO's corporate communications strategy in consultation with the Head of Strategy, planning & coordination unit, DCO Director and WHO's global communications staff working at three levels;
  • Coordinate and facilitate implementation of the communications strategy by organizing editorial meetings, tools and measurement and analysis in partnership with relevant colleagues, identifying gaps, insights and solutions;
  • Support communications coordination and planning of high-level events such as the World Health Assembly, Executive Board and other meetingsSupport planning, coordination and evaluation of WHO communication strategy.

Brand management:

  • Develop and manage rollout and implementation of WHO global brand guidance, including guidance on WHO logo use, which is a very busy and active area with requests coming from across the three levels.
  • Provide regular advice and support to WHO staff at the headquarters, regional and country offices on issues related to WHO branding and logo policies by managing the helpdesk at [email protected].
  • Coordinate the WHO Visual Identity Working Group to review and approve visual identity and logo requests from three levels of the organization.
  • Manage brand management tools and policies such as the WHO branding and logo intranet resources, WHO logo and branding-related updates of the WHO e-manual and Digital Asset Management platform to ensure open, transparent and accessible guidance and information on branding for all WHO staff.
  • Coordinating DCO activities, and meetings for strategic planning, including engaging with the three levels of other duties relating to Strategy, Planning and Coordination.
  • Other duties such as writing, editing, and reviewing WHO brand identity-related reports, brochures, showcase stories, presentations etc.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Advanced level university degree in communications, journalism, or related field.

Experience

Essential: 7 years of experience in communications. Experience as a communications strategist. Experience in producing and/or administering brand management Desirable: Relevant experience in WHO or another UN agency is an asset. Experience in working with senior management, and internal and external partners.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 77,326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5136 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
