ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Angola is a resource-rich country that has made substantial economic and political progress since the end of civil war in 2002. With a new reform-oriented government, Angola now has a window of opportunity to begin a period of more inclusive and sustainable growth that supports equitable outcomes.

Apart from the humanitarian challenges that the country faces as the host of refugees and asylum-seekers, food insecurity and undernutrition remain serious public health problems, which are driven by a range of factors including poverty, limited dietary diversity, poor sanitation and hygiene conditions, and gender inequality. The food security situation is further exacerbated by a severe drought in the south and center of Angola. A comparison of rainfall and vegetation cover data since 1981 indicates that the southwestern provinces experienced the worst drought in the last 40 years in October 2020 – May 2021.

WFP is working with the Government of Angola and a broad range of partners towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2 (Zero Hunger) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

WFP Communications, Advocacy and Marketing Unit aims to enhance public awareness and understanding of WFP’s work in the country. It aims to improve brand recognition through a variety of communication avenues to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. The Unit’s work spreads over a spectrum of tasks which include creating creative content, media engagement, developing stories, writing and editing external documents. The Communications Intern will support the team in the delivery of this mandate.

ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Monitor media and identify trends and issues • Develop content through infographics, video and graphics and support multiple communication initiatives when required. • Support Country Office with our multimedia hub database • Support internal communications activities, designing presentations on our work in the country and managing archiving and documentation. • Assist in the preparation of reports and data analysis (e.g. food assistance needs, resource utilization, programme status, performance) and highlight trends/issues ensuring deliverables adhere to corporate standards and quality control; • Support communication with local partners, agencies, NGOs and government institutions to perform accurate food security analysis and to ensure efficient delivery of food assistance; • Support in preparation of internal and external communications materials, including social media copy, human stories, reports, brochures, leaflets and other formats; • Assist in keeping track of important news, events, milestones and other communication opportunities; • Support the development and running of events; • Provide relevant research and translation services and other ad-hoc support; • Help keep accurate records for reporting purposes and help update our mailing lists; • Other duties related to Communications and Reporting, as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate programme (for example, Bachelor’s degree) and have completed at least two years of the programme as well as have attended classes in the last 12 months;
• Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (for example, Masters and have attended classes in the last 12 months
• Recent graduate (from an undergraduate or graduate programme) within six months prior to application to the internship and attended classes in the last 12 months of enrolment with the university.

Preferred field of study: Communications, Media, marketing and branding or other relevant fields and studies

Knowledge and Skills:

• Experience utilizing computer programmes, including Media software, Microsoft Word, Excel
• Interest in media, current news and regional politics
• Accurate, creative open-minded team player with strong initiative and willingness to learn

Language:

Fluency in both oral and written English Language) and Portuguese Knowledge of a second official UN language an asset

CONTRACTUAL INFORMATION

• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
