BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The Corporate Finance Division (FIN) is mid-way through implementing the Finance Strategy 2024. In 2021, the finance function developed its Finance Communications and Engagement Strategy (FCE), which outlined priority focus areas in a broader outreach into the finance function and its work areas. The lessons learned from the communication initiatives implemented point towards an increasing focus on communicating the strategic finance partnership value to a broader audience beyond the finance function, a cohesive approach to the global finance function’s communication support to emerging opportunities in finance and their impacts on WFP field operations. The Finance Transformation and Field Support Branch (FINF) coordinates and provides strategic guidance and support on Communication to the Corporate Finance Division in the WFP Headquarters in Rome and to over 920 global finance staff.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Chief, Finance Transformation and Field Support(FINF) or designate, the incumbent will work in close coordination with the Communications, Advocacy, and Marketing(CAM) Division and other divisions as needed.

What you will do:

  • Lead the implementation of the action plan as defined in the Finance Communications and Engagement Strategy (FCE) and ensure alignment with the Finance Strategy 2024.
  • Advise on communications best practices and support Finance management with the planning, coordination, and development of communications strategies and messaging for Finance initiatives
  • Lead the collaboration with senior staff (such as Chiefs, Senior Finance Officers in the regions and in Country Offices) and CAM (such as HQ Digital and Content teams, Regional Bureau and Country Office Communication, Advocacy, and Marketing Officers) to develop and share editorial Finance achievements and personal success stories on internal and external communications channels
  • Support with the conceptualization and facilitation of key engagement meetings and events (such as the Finance Talks series, HQ Finance All Staff meetings, Global Finance Meeting, etc.)
  • Lead the Finance “Communications Network” to consolidate actions and explore opportunities for collaboration
  • Define an external communications plan which leverages social media content, platforms, networks, and partners to enhance coverage and support of WFP’s Finance activities, developing and maintaining communication materials catered to different audiences and in several media channels
  • Develop and maintain communication materials catered to different audiences and in several media channels, augmenting the capacity of staff through external relations communication, providing advice, guidance, and training to ensure consistent, quality communications activities that deliver the desired impact
  • Manage the UN reform Information platform, developing coherent communications products, including stories, reports, presentation decks, messages, and videos, to enhance information storing and sharing
  • In collaboration with the Knowledge Management focal point, oversee the Finance Learning Channel design and maintain the platform, providing updates on the various financial resources to the concerned stakeholders
  • Build capacity of WFP staff through learning and development initiatives, focused on leadership and interpersonal skills, fostering a culture of learning and development
  • Guide branches and field teams with the production of communications products, maintaining the Finance “brand” and a unified approach while aligning with corporate guidelines and standards
  • Coordinate and prepare reports and talking points to communicate the value and impact of the finance role and its added strategic value to stakeholders
  • Provide analysis of communication activities and their impact within the finance function and beyond
  • Act as liaison between Finance and Communication, Advocacy and Marketing division, between Finance and communications focal points in other divisions
  • Supervision of staff as required and other duties related to the role.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Education:

An advanced degree preferably in one or more disciplines: communications, public administration, economics, journalism, public policy, business management, operations management, development studies, and international studies or related areas.

Experience:

At least 5 years of postgraduate progressively responsible national and/or international level experience in communications, advocacy, coordination, and or other related areas. At least 2 years of experience in WFP field operations. Has managed small teams of staff.

Language: Fluency (level C) in the English language. Knowledge of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or WFP’s working language, Portuguese, will be an advantage Required Skills:

PROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches in knowledge management and communications; ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems. Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities. Ability to analyze and interpret data in support of decision-making and convey resulting information to management

Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
