Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UNEP/New York Office, serves as the UNEP’s principal representative in New York and ensures that the United Nations Environment Programme is able to participate, at the appropriate level of seniority, in important meetings of decision and policy making bodies and organs of the United Nations in New York, as well as senior consultations within the United Nations Secretariat. The Assistant Secretary-General has the oversight of the wider New York Office, inclusive of Sustainable UN team and EMG Secretariat (both located in Geneva) and of the North America Office based in Washington D.C.

Responsibilities of Consultant

The Consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer and will perform the following key roles: - Undertake strategic communications planning and processes that contribute to UNEP mission and work at UNHQ to increase visibility and raise public awareness. - Manage, upon agreed guidelines from the supervisor (including UNEP’s guidelines and the New York Office’s priorities), UNEP New York Office online presence on social media, including regular updates and campaigns, meetings and events as well as UNEP New York Office’s website updates and content - Produce various communication products and materials, such as save the date, presentations, strategies and briefing notes. - Support the coordination work for the monthly UNEP New York Office update in coordination with staff of the New York Office and in close cooperation with the Information Officer. - Disseminate UNEP publications to UNHQ audiences through social media and others - Contribute to visual and digital communications, including photo gathering and editing and graphic creation - Organize/ support to organize public events, as needed - Ensure UNEP branding standards are applied consistently across all communication platform - Perform other duties as required

Qualifications/special skills- An advanced degree in media, journalism, international relations or related studies. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. At least 5 years of experience in communications and social media At least 5 years of experience in writing, editing and producing communications /marketing materials Experience on the use of publishing and creative software Working experience in an international organization is highly desirable Experience using Adobe or online platforms for illustration, design, photo editing and video post-production. Adobe certification is a bonus Experience in web design, content management and Search Engine Optimization are an advantage. Strong practical background in graphic design, including the knowledge of basic design software such as Canva desirable.

Languages For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
