Result of Service Communication lies at the heart of UNEP’s mandate and effective communication is an integral part of the strategic management of the organization. This consultancy is required to strengthen our role in communicating UNEP's core messages, campaigns, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP with Member States, UN agencies, stakeholders and partners in UN Headquarters.

Expected duration The contract will be for 6 months.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF CONSULTANT

The Consultant will work in UNEP/New York Office under the direct supervision of the Information Officer and will perform the following key roles:

  • Support strategic communications planning and processes that contribute to UN Environment’s mission and work at UNHQ to increase visibility and raise public awareness
  • Support the management of UN Environment New York Office online presence on social media, including regular updates and campaigns
  • Support the production of communication products and materials
  • Support website management, including assisting preparation of content and updates
  • Promote UNEP publications to UNHQ audiences
  • Contribute to visual and digital communications, including photo gathering and editing, graphic creation and presentation, and other multi-media editing, including video and audio
  • Assist in the organization of events, including briefings
  • Ensure UN Environment branding standards are applied consistently across all communication platform
  • Perform other duties as required

    Qualifications/special skills Skills: - Strong planning and writing skills - Good understanding of new digital technologies and online tools/platforms - Knowledge of standard software packages (Microsoft Office and Adobe) - Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing online campaigns and/or marketing strategies across different channels, namely Facebook, Twitter. - Ability to use social media management and monitoring platforms such as HootSuite, Tweetdeck, Sprout Social etc. - Ability to communicate visually and create appealing communication products - Experience using Adobe or online platforms for illustration, design, photo editing and video post-production. Adobe certification is a bonus. - Ability to design a wide range of communication supports, including infographics, presentations, and layouts for both web, social media, mobile and print - Experience in web design, content management and Search Engine Optimization are an advantage - Strong practical background in graphic design, including the knowledge of design software such as Adobe Design Premium‐package and web design tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash. - Basic understanding of web development technologies desirable - Innovative and creative Academic Qualifications: Post-secondary degree or equivalent in media, journalism, international relations or related studies. Experience: - At least five years of experience in social media and communications - Experience on the use of publishing and creative software - Working experience in an international organization is highly desirable - Good understanding of environmental issues, development issues and current events Language: Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
