Result of Service The ultimate result of the work is development of a communications strategy to raise the CMS profile and promote accession of new Parties.

Work Location Remote

Expected duration 2 months. The contract is planned to start on 1 September 2021 until 31 October 2021

Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the CMS Legal Officer and in close coordination with the acting coordinator of the Joint Communications Team for the CMS and AEWA Secretariats (IMCA), the Consultant will be responsible for performing the following duties, as required:

  • Develop an inception report, including the assessment of the current communication practices in the CMS Secretariat
  • In consultation with the IMCA team, the CMS Executive Secretary and other Secretariat staff members, establish the objectives of the overarching communications strategy, identification of stakeholders, development of key messaging for the target audiences and defining the means of communication (i.e. mode, platform, frequency);
  • Development of an overarching communications strategy encompassing the following elements: - Overall content of the strategy: including its objectives, target audience(s), planned approaches/activities, expected outcomes and timeframes, and means of communication; - Strategic implementation plan, including identification of associated challenges, opportunities and potential partners - Drafting of key messages on the CMS and specific topics for targeted audiences, and preparing materials aimed at non-Parties

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced University degree (Master’s or equivalent) in the field of communications, journalism, public affairs, public relations, public advocacy, environmental management or other related fields; or a Bachelor’s degree in combination with 2 (two) additional years of relevant professional experience; or specialized training or a diploma in communications, marketing, journalism, public advocacy or other related fields obtained from a vocational training institute in combination with 4 (four) additional years of relevant professional experience, is required. Experience: The consultant must have a minimum 7 years’ demonstrated experience in strategic communications preferably working with governments and/or international organizations in the field of environment and/or development. Experience in developing communications strategies is required. Knowledge of issues related to biodiversity conservation is a strong asset. Language: English, French Spanish are the working languages of the CMS Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
