Contract

This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

The development sector is changing very quickly, and innovation is becoming the central ingredient in any development intervention. Business as usual no longer has a place in development. UNDP is at the forefront of deploying innovative solutions to development challenges in order to help nations achieve sustainable development goals. One of those initiatives is the integrated innovation ecosystem support programme, the Funguo Innovation Programme (also simply referred to as FUNGUO).

Building on the work of the former Human Development Innovation Fund programme (HDIF), the ultimate aim of FUNGUO is to increase the number of successfully scaled innovation ventures/ startups to contribute to the national development goals and the SDGs in Tanzania. This will be achieved through the programme’s contribution in addressing the stumbling blocks and gaps in the innovation ecosystem that hinder innovative impact ventures from scaling, while promoting an environment that empowers innovators and enablers. The three main pillars of the programme are:

•Innovation Financing: This will include, but not be limited to, building a viable pipeline of innovation impact ventures/ startups, working with partners to provide relevant and flexible financial and technical support innovation ventures /startups and ultimately setting up an autonomous Funguo Innovation Facility that will leverage public funding to unlock private / third party financing and investment. •Innovation Service Delivery: Contributing to strengthening the capacity of service delivery institutions (hubs, incubators, accelerators, professional business development services providers, etc) in order to support and lead innovative start-ups to a stage where they could attract impact and/or commercial investments. •Innovation Enabling Environment: working with and supporting policy makers and other innovation stakeholders to promote strategic dialogues, policy influencing and engagement across the innovation ecosystem.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the FUNGUO Communications, Outreach and Advocacy Lead, the UNV communication associate will assist in the implementation of the following key activities:

•Initiation and coordination of efforts to promote innovation for development in Tanzania. •Lead in the design, implementation of and support to key innovation ecosystem events such as the Innovation Week Tanzania (IWTz) •Promoting the programme work and partners’ brand visibility •Implementation of a vibrant communication strategy for the programme (with emphasis on digital communication) •Development and dissemination of relevant and impactful content

The Communications Associate will also support the UNDP’s Communications and Partnership Analyst to enhance UNDP Tanzania’s visibility, market successful projects, document successes and best practices, improve internal communication and strengthen media relations to keep the public and stakeholders informed about our role and activities. More specifically, the Communications Associate will support the UNDP Tanzania’s communications efforts in the following:

•Identifying, documenting and drafting of best practices and lessons learned •Overall media monitoring on UNDP related issues, including in creating an updated media and partners contact list • Creating public awareness on the effectiveness and impact of the UNDP’s work in Tanzania. •Maintenance and updating of the UNDP website and social media pages, preparation of press releases, media advisories, talking points, speeches, web content, articles and general correspondence, among others. •Assisting various teams in the organization of key events and communication op-opportunities, such as major conferences, workshops, discussions and report launches; including graphic designing of reports, infographics and case studies. •Assisting in systematic capturing of key achievements and lessons learnt of UNDP activities for knowledge sharing and improvement of the CO overall knowledge management system. •Research and monitor relevant websites and social media channels as needed to feed content into the work of the communications team.

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's most important city for both business and government. The city contains high concentrations of trade and other services and manufacturing compared to other parts of Tanzania, which has about 80 percent of its population in rural areas. Downtown includes many small businesses, many of which are run by traders and proprietors whose families originated from the Middle East and Indian sub-continent—areas of the world with which the settlements of the Tanzanian coast have had long-standing trading relations.

Gradually the UN will move to Dodoma, the political capital of the country as the central government is relocating there in the near future.
