Under the direct supervision of the International Communications Officer and the overall guidance of the Head of the WHO Country Office, the incumbent is the focal point for all administrative responsibilities in the communication unit. S/he will monitor traditional and social media for corporate news, updates, and potential reputational risks, maintain and expand the unit’s different rosters for the media journalists, designers, suppliers, consultants, and other relevant professionals. Daily work is performed independently, and non-routine matters are discussed with the supervisor to obtain clearance/views on a recommended course of action. Considerable judgment and interpretation are involved to determine appropriate methods for the processing of the various tasks and in adapting established practices to assigned work, ensuring applying rules and recommending alternatives

The communications team supports the WHO Representative by strategically overseeing the public communication work within the country office and by generating visibility for WHOs work in Yemen. The team is responsible for corporate communications, media relations, advocacy and campaigns, audio and visual production, managing communication within the context of emergencies, and providing advice to the various country office programmes on communication matters.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  1. Handle the unit’s regular dissemination of media releases and other communications products
  2. Monitor traditional and social media for prevailing public health issues [with a focus on WHO/Yemen] and prepare a regular media monitoring report.
  3. Manage non-staff contractual arrangements pertaining to procurement of communications goods and services, and keep an up-to-date roster of relevant suppliers including but not limited to media and design agencies, vide/photographers, social media experts, media consultants, and personalities, etc.
  4. Provide relevant technical input and develop agenda/material for the communication unit’s internal meetings.
  5. Maintain, expand and enhance the unit’s digital media roster through continued networking with the media outlets, journalists, and representatives.
  6. Organize the administrative aspects of the unit’s meetings, training workshops, media briefings, press conferences, and other ongoing events including liaising with counterparts at the Ministry of Health.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Completion of secondary education supplemented by training in relevant fields.

Desirable: University degree in communications, marketing, journalism or a related field.

Experience

Essential: At least eight years’ progressive experience working in the fields of public information, media, and communications, preferably in multinational settings.

Desirable: Work experience in public health and/or development as well as UN/international organization.

Skills

  • Excellent knowledge of WHO rules, manuals, and administrative procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of media and communications practices including familiarity with social media.
  • Advanced secretarial, organizational, and networking skills.
  • Hands-on skills in using traditional and digital communications tools and platforms.

Use of Language Skills

Excellent knowledge of English and the local language. Working knowledge of another WHO official language would be an asset.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Hands-on skills to use digital networking platforms such as WhatsApp for dissemination of communications news, updates, and media advisories

REMUNERATION

Remuneration comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 22,986 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave
